Gardner-Webb 14 - Sam Houston State 30

Made the long trip to Huntsville, TX to watch our Runnin' Bulldogs try to regroup from a disappointing loss to W. Carolina last week. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be. Our group spent the weekend in SHSU Hotel and had a nice 4th floor view of the football stadium. After an evening of McKenzie's BBQ and a long day of travel we turned in early for a good night's rest. With a 6:00 kickoff, we had plenty of time to kill and spent the afternoon watching several FBS games on the tube. We got to the stadium around 5:00 with a light rain in the area that continued until early in the 4th Quarter.

A little over 8,000 were on hand for the Bearkats' 1st home game of the season. GW had a difficult time finding its offense in the 1st Quarter while SH managed to score its first TD on its 3rd possession. SH then scored TDs on it next two possessions and it looked like it was going to be a long day for the Runnin' Bulldogs!

Finally, after previously missing a 45 yd FG attempt, GW managed to score a TD when QB John Rock

managed to connect with WR Jamal Patmon on a 35 yd pass.

SH managed to kick a FG with 20 secs left in the half to go with their three TDs and the score was 24-7 at halftime.
Freshman Preston Permasa [#52] had a nice game with 6 tackles and this sack.

Jamal Patmon had his best game of his career with 6 catches totalling 124 yds.

GW's run game was shut down by SH with Patrick Hall and company only able to put a net 57 yds of rushing on the board. Sam Houston's defense focused on our run game and was able to make us one dimensional. I suspect they wanted us to throw to see if they could replicate our 5 ints against W. Carolina. This week, there was only 1 int and this was actually a ball that was tipped by our WR into the waiting hands of SH's DB in the end zone.

The game ended with a lovely fireworks show that would have been much more enjoyable if the Runnin' Bulldogs had played a little better. Interestingly, the stats [except for the rushing stats] seemed to favor the Bulldogs. SH beat us with big plays on O and forcing us into a passing attack that never really caught fire.

Except for the outcome of the game, it was a nice weekend in Huntsville. Met lots of very nice folks and ate a lot of good food. Looking forward to seeing our boys play Old Dominion next Saturday.
