Samford: What the Heck?

Destroyed by a decent FSU team, but now this? A 3 point win over Newberry? Losing to Newberry 21-7 at halftime?
Outgained by Newberry.
More penalties than Newberry.
A blocked punt return was the difference in the game.
Only 5-15 on Third Down, while allowing Newberry to go 8-17.
I'm confused, since I really thought Samford was gonna be a player in the SOCON this year. Is this just a really big hiccup? Did the short week screw things up? Were there major injuries? Or did I just overestimate Samford?

Definitely not a good sign for Samford.

Nope. I was rooting for them to make a push in the SoCon this year, but that might not happen.

Then again, they could turn it around and win the conference.

I watched the game last nite on Channellsurfing and it was a very poor performance by Samford to say the least. They finally took control in the second half to lead by 10 but then allowed Samford to drive the length of the field and score to make it a three point game with 2 minutes left. Then Newberry succeeded in recovering an on-side kick. On 3rd and very long (because of a holding call) Sammy gave up a complete pass down to around the Samford 25 only to have it called back with another holding call. Damn lucky to escape overtime if not a loss.
I gotta think they were looking ahead to ASU's visit next week but to give up around 450 yards to an okay Div II is very surprising. I hope the ASU coaches don't allow the players to see film of this game as I would expect a different Sammy next weekend.
This is not what one expects from a SoCon team not from Cullowhee...
