Big Sky Power Rankings 9/13

A little bit different than Sagarin, but then they are nationally and I'm just a lonely clerical worker (really I am). Anyway, I've got a new number #1, expected in a way as the teams are pretty well bunched up at the beginning of the year so performances go a long way, as not much in the way of past performance. The outcomes were such that all the teams now sit at 1-1, most expected, some surprised. Here are this week's power rankings. As usual all are my opinion only (not influenced by Sagarin or any other national publications) and all are open for discussion. This week (last week).

1. Montana State (2)---Everyone now sits 1-1 in conference, but by all accounts, the Bobcats should be 2-0. They were poised for a big upset in beating a Pac-10 team in Washington State. (The Big Sky has not beaten the Pac-10 since 1996 when Montana won at Oregon State). However, the depth of the Pac-10 showed in the fourth quarter and the Bobcats took it on the chin barely. This week, Ash's former team, Drake, comes calling. Hopefully, the Bobcats have learned something in the years after Chadron State.

2. Montana (1)---Highly unusual that the Grizzlies do not find themselves in the top spot in these rankings. Most found the score of the Cal Poly game rather interesting to say the least, but most thought the Grizzlies would come back. Unfortunately, it did not happen and the Grizzlies lost their first game on the road. This week, a start to the conference season, and they have to go to Eastern Washington, a team primed with confidence now that the Grizzlies have shown they can be beat.

3. Eastern Washington (3)---Coming off a good performance against FBS Nevada, the Eagles were primed for their conference opener with Montana. However, they had a game to be played in Seattle against DII Central Washington. With the score a bit perplexing, one has to wonder what happened to this Eagles team, or were they just looking forward to the home opener against the Grizzlies this weekend. Here's hoping it was just the latter.

4. Northern Arizona (4)---The Jacks took their act down into the desert to play the Pac-10's Arizona State, who snuffed fellow Big Sky team Portland State the week before, and, one could say, they had more success than the Vikings there. However, a loss is still a loss and it was pretty much expected. Questions are getting answered in a positive way and now is a time for assessment as the Jacks head in to a bye week this week before heading down to Idaho State in two weeks.

5. Sacramento State (6)---The Hornets may have more questions than when they started the year (if that could be possible) but they did handle the DII Western Oregon squad that came down to Sacramento this past weekend. Unfortunately, the injury bug seems to have hit the Hornets in the same game as various players had numerous aches and pains after. Whomever is left to play remains to be seen as this week they welcome fellow Big Sky member Weber State to their home turf. A good test for where the Hornets will be, as long as the injuries sort themselves out properly.

6. Weber State (5)---This year's Wildcat game with Northern Colorado took 4 overtimes to finally decide the winner. Luckily, the Wildcats came out on top over a very game Northern Colorado team. These two seem to enjoy playing close games and this one was no exception. Things are getting answered and more will be answered this weekend as they head over to play Sacramento State. They snuffed out the Bears, can they do the same to a game Hornet team.

7. Northern Colorado (7)---Four overtimes is what it took at Weber State, but the Bears still found themselves on the short end. These two seem to relish in playing close games and this was as close as it could get. Unfortunately for the Bears, it ended up a loss. This week, a chance to get a start on the year as they welcome Idaho State to the cozy confines in Greeley. This can still be a great year, but it has to start here.

8. Portland State (9)---After their performance at Arizona State, not many gave the Vikings a chance at UC-Davis, a place where the Aggies lost only once all year last year. But the Vikings got an early jump in the game and afterward, were able to match UC-Davis point for point for the win. Obviously the Vikings showed they can be competitive against the FCS, however this week, they make a return trip to the Pac-10 as they play at Oregon. Could possibly get ugly.

9. Idaho State (8)---After winning their first game of the year, the Bengals headed down the road to face the FBS Utah State with ambitions of continuing their winning ways. However, they were soundly brought back to earth as Utah State controlled them from start to finish. Still, good things are happening this year and they possibly could have a great year. This week, they head out to Northern Colorado, hoping to resurrect their good winning ways in the conference matchup.

Where they are as of now...MSU at the top with UM close behind, EWU a bit further back, NAU, Sac State, WSU and UNC all pretty much bunched together, PSU and ISU close behind.

SH…..I sure hope your not gonna use that logic to vote in the CS poll. I totally understand having high expectations for your team, but you have completely lost it if you think your list is legitimate.

I would list it like this…….

1.Montana – understand they just lost, but theyre still Montana, Ill move them when they lose to a big sky team.

2.Montana State – The cats look like theyre rolling, should be 2-0 let Wazzu get away with one, but it was just Wazzu so im not gonna anoint them just yet.

3.Eastern Washington – With Jones rushing the ball these guys are always gonna be a threat, plus with the hype surrounding the new “blood blades” down on the field the program is buzzing with excitement.

4.Northern Arizona – Im a little conflicted with my 4-5 picks as the Jacks offense has yet to show the same explosiveness it showed last season. Herrick and his report with the new WRs has been pretty mediocre so far The Defense has proven to be the strong point thus far.

5.Weber State – Again I could interchange 4-5. Higgins has been great so far and seems to be the top performing QB thus far. Plus these guys have been tested early in the season which will help out later in the year.

6.Northern Colorado – These guys look like theyre coming around and appear to be a team to be reckoned with. Just like EWU, these guys got an exciting facility upgrade and it seems to have sparked some fire in Greely.

7.Sacramento State- The injury bug is a horrible thing to have to deal with early in the season.

8.Portland State- After a pretty rough start down in Tempe, (no disrespect but walking out of sun devil stadium saturday I herd “Damn those guys (NAU) were way better then Portland St.) the Viks got the ball rolling against future member Davis.

9.Idaho State – A loss this past week to Utah State could easily turn into a second strait loss to up and coming UNC.

OK. I'm giving up on the Quick Reply tonight. Those ads are covering practically the entire QR space.

I never said I wasn't myopic.

I WILL just about guarantee THIS, though. If Sac does not win the title, Montana will. Anyone who says Montana is done strictly because of the coaching change has been drinking the Eagle Kool-Aid.

Right now, NAU is way better than PSU. Objectively, I know it. We'll see how the season plays out though.

It could be NAU will be better than PSU this year. And next year. But soon we will be back up with the conference elite.

For now, you speak the truth, my friend. :thumb:

Solid job J. I’m really concerned with the injuries we are suffering. I don’t know if it was poor preparation and conditioning by the coaches in camp or just awful luck. The loss of MBT was huge and our season would be over if we didn’t land that transfer QB from NM State the week before the season started. We are suppose to have our WR’s at or near full strength this week which will help, and Shaw (transfer RB from UDub) suffered a concussion and was carted off. He seems to be okay but it’s safe to say he misses at least one week as I don’t think our coaches would risk his health unless the doctors are completely fine with him playing. Fortunately we have some depth but this many injuries this early is a real concern. :|

The selection of MSU as #1 this week was an inspired choice, JALMOND! :thumb: They will look even better next week after drubbing Drake, but face a tough home game the following week vs EWU and a pair of really tough road games later in the season, at NAU and UM. Unless the Wildcats continue to lose a net 6 turnovers, as they did vs UNC, Weber in Bozeman later in the season won't be a pushover, either.

Montana is more vulnerable this year than in most, but we all know that a wounded Grizzly is a dangerous Grzzly, and with UM's abundant baseline of talent and coaching resources, nobody expects the Grizz to stay down. There is however, a unique window of opportunity this year for the wannabees. All eyes will be on EWU and Taiwan Jones as they host the Grizz this week. If Jones is healthy, I give the Eagles slightly better than a 50/50 chance for victory.

However, there is not yet enough difference in game performances between the top five contenders to justify significant in a power rating. Although I agree that Montana State is thus far the strongest of the contenders, I tend to agree with Sagarin this week:

117 Montana AA = 60.18 1 1 69.71( 57) 0 0 | 0 0 | 56.11 139 | 63.66 98
124 Weber State AA = 58.15 1 1 61.64( 118) 0 0 | 0 0 | 59.86 118 | 55.76 139
126 Northern Arizona AA = 58.03 1 1 76.73( 23) 0 0 | 0 0 | 57.31 133 | 58.07 125
129 Eastern Washington AA = 57.83 1 1 78.93( 18) 0 0 | 0 0 | 57.49 132 | 57.50 127
140 Montana State AA = 55.42 1 1 63.50( 102) 0 0 | 0 0 | 51.28 161 | 58.71 119

Weber at #5??? Some of you sages are discounting the Wildcats too much. Even with a horrifying negative turnover differential, Cameron Higgins leads the Big Sky in passing performance, despite Weber playing an FBS opponent and not playing down to a lower level team. In the first two games, Cam is making great decisions, few mistakes, and looking a lot like his old 2008 self, not his 2009 mistake-prone self. Most of those turnovers were not Cam's, but made by newbies who will get better as the season progresses.

PASSING AVG/GAME Cl G Comp-Att-Int Pct. Yards TD Long Avg/G
1. Higgins,Cameron-WSU SR 2 57 - 93 - 1 61.3 574 5 38 287.0

MSU: They look to be operating on more cylinders right now.

Montana: Lots of new faces, lots of mistakes, learn more this week at EWU.

EWU: Which team will show up?

NAU: Looking very respectable.

Sac State: Will injuries submarine the hopefull season?

Weber: Big question mark.

UNC: Scary, watch out.

PSU: Would rather play them early in the season. Will get better later.

ISU: Don't know what to say.

UNC - On the rise
PSU - could surpise some teams this year
ISU - young and improving
SAC - just for SuperWhoreNut

He will play. Trainers and testing ruled it wasn't a concussion, just dehydration.

Here's how I see it going into Week 3.

1.) MSU
2.) UM
3.) Weber State
4.) NAU
5.) EWU
6.) Sac State
7.) UNC
8.) PSU
9.) ISU

Right now I feel like MSU could be the strongest team in the conference, with UM right there as well. Funny, but #2 - #5 are probably interchangeable at this point in the season, we'll obviously have a better idea after this week. I really feel like EWU, NAU, and Sac are basically unknowns at this point as none have played any quality FCS opposition thus far. Would obviously like to have placed EWU higher, but after last week's game I just can't justify it yet, unless we beat Montana this weekend, in which case I'd put us at second. MSU looks strong.
