Gardner-Webb 38 - Akron 37

The usual suspects arrived at Infocision Stadium in Akron to cheer on our Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at about 9:45 for a 12:00 kickoff. Just in time for a couple of cool pops and an opportunity to chat with some of the local faithful.

Image

We made the short hike to the stadium and got to watch our boys warm up and see the Zips mascot arrive in a Humvee.

Image

Admittedly, I arrived at the stadium with some concern and didn't really give my Runnin 'Bulldogs a serious chance to win this game. We have several significant injuries and it just didn't seem that we had the personnel to pull off an upset of an FBS team. Early in the game it seemed that my concerns were valid as GW really wasn't able to mount much of a challenge to the superior size presented by the Zips.

With returning star RB Patrick Hall still out with an injury, GW continued giving the ball to Juanne
Blount and Juanne did not disappoint. Juanne ran for 79 yds and 1 TD.

The coaching staff continues to rotate John Rock - #3 - and Chandler Browning - #12 -at the QB position:

Image

Image

Chandler had a very nice game and very likely put his name in the hat for Big South Freshman of the Week with his performance today [17 of 27 for 198 yds, 1 TD, 0 int.]. Not a bad day for a young fellow. He really shows a lot of poise for a kid who has only played 2 college football games.

Image

While Chandler did have a good game, it does appear that our coaches will continue to play QB by committee for the foreseeable future as Chandler and John both shared the play-calling duties.

Nino Woolridge - #1 - got the first GW TD of the day.

Image

Jamal Patmon caught a TD pass from John Rock as the 1st half came to an end and both teams headed to the locker room with Akron up 21 - 17.

Image

Although GWU was 4 points behind, they had done a good job of keeping up with the Zips statistically during the 1st half. GW had 12 1st downs compared to Akron's 9. GW had 74 rushing yds and Akron had 77 rushing yds. GW had 114 passing yds and Akron had 102 with 1 int. Time of possession was evenly split at 15 minutes per side.

As the 2nd half got started, GW clearly wanted to win this game. It was clear that the big momentum changer was an obvious no call by the refs when a GW receiver was interfered with. Coach Patton really got fired up and let the ref have everything he was willing to give. If you know Coach Patton, you know that his language is pretty tame for a football coach. However, the GW players really seemed to feed off of Coach Patton's actions and they got fired up.

Image

Bryce Nixon - #13 - was a major element of the defense's success. Nixon led the team with 9 total tackles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked extra point during the OT that ended up being the difference in the game.

Image

It was a great day to be a Runnin' Bulldog fan. I'm thrilled that we got to play this game before Coach Ianello had coached the Zips more than 2 games. You can tell that they are going to get better as their season progresses. It appears that we caught them at just the right time.

By the same token, our Runnin' Bulldogs should get some much needed confidence with this win. I doubt many serious football fans gave us much of a chance in this game without the services of Marty Patterson and Jeffrey Williams.

Next Saturday, we host Western Carolina at Spangler Stadium. Promises to be a really good contest. We look forward to seeing the Cats in Boiling Springs next Saturday.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

Great pix yet again elcid....too bad the G-W sports information department can't get a clue.

Looks like that game with the boys from the Whee next week will be a glorified scrimmage after their performance against Tusculum tonight. :thumb:

I'll be there with my Nikon. I'm confident that a large contingent of other parents will also be on hand. We look forward to seeing your beautiful stadium.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

Actually, Marc Rabb and I are hooking up after games and I'm getting him some of my pics to post on the GW web site. The site is always more interesting to me when there are several pics rather than just one. I am going to help them improve that.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

Good job, GW! Hope your coaches can keep the team's intensity on an even keel and take care of business next week against western. Even though they were beaten (humiliated) by Tusculum, they aren't as bad as that game indicates. It appears that just about any team should be able to throw the ball on them, though.

Great win. We'll be seeing you in a few weeks. I have a tailgate spot near Gate B. Just hover in the area until I spot you and you are welcome to join our tailgate.

Zips fan here, just thought id come on here and share this video that includes some highlights from the game. Keep in mind this was put together by a fan, but still has some good shots. Congratulations on the big win and i must say that i was impressed with the class of the GW fans that made the trip. Though there wern't many, they were loud at times and definitely were respectful the entire day. btw if you are interested in hearing our side of the game (and how the sky is falling in Zip country) check out http://www.zipsnation.org

enjoy,

Congratulations on a great win for the Runnin' Bulldogs! I'm looking forward to GW's visit to ODU on October 2nd. I have a friend who is an alumnus of GW and will be making the trip to Norfolk with a group.

Pre-game post quotes off the Akron Zips Football Message Board...

"The Zips will be more than they can handle in every phase of the game, and I expect the final score to be much like the Morgan State game last year."

"We still have talent lights years ahead of a nobody like Gardner Webb. This game will be a beatdown."

Post-game quotes off the Akron Zips Football Message Board....

" Ok, NOW the sky is falling."

"Gardner Webb did a great job with the short game spreading the defense out and then tearing it to shreds up the gut or taking it deep at a whim."

"OMG"

"When the scoreboard showed the comparison of offensive stats at the half, even though the Zips were in the lead we were getting beat in virtually every category. That's when you know something is wrong."

FCS wins against BCS mounting at an ever increasing rate, let's all hand the big boys a box of tissue. Congrats to JMU, South Dakota, Liberty and our own Gardner-Webb Runnin Bulldogs

6 bite marks to be exact, 5 INTS and 1 Fumble. Other than that, the Dawgs won most of the battles but lost the war, specifically the Scoreboard War and the TO Margin War. Battles the Dawgs won, Time of Possession 33 min to 27 min, Total Yds 391 to 245, First Downs 24 to 7 and so on. These kind of things are what makes college football so unpredictable, so much fun and so frustrating. There's no other game like it.

Congrats to the Catamounts again for a much needed win. Maybe next week's cat like GWU opponent, the Bearkats of Sam Houston State will not win either most of the battles not the War.
