Red Turf Gets Overwhelming Approval from Eagle Players

Taiwan Jones likes the color, but at this point in the season -- less than a week away from the first game of the year -- he’s color blind.

The Eastern Washington University All-America running back and his teammates got a chance to practice for the first time Friday afternoon (Aug. 27) on Eastern’s new red Sprinturf field at soon to be re-named Woodward Field on the EWU campus in Cheney, Wash. Thanks to a $500,000 pledge made to the project by former Eagle and current Tennessee Titan Michael Roos and his wife Katherine, the field will officially be re-named Roos Field in a ceremony on Sept. 16.

Jones has more reasons than most to be excited for the new surface. Last year as a sophomore, he averaged 6.1 yards at home on grass and 8.2 in Eastern’s other eight games that included seven artificial surfaces as well as one grass field at Sacramento State with excellent footing.

“So far it’s just like green to me,” Jones said as EWU continued preparations for Eastern’s opener at Nevada on Thursday (Sept. 2). “We’re all excited that it’s red, but I think more people are jacked about the fact it’s game week.”

You're right, the black pellets really tone it down.

Can't say I'm a huge fan, but at least it's something to call your own. :thumb:

i'd hate to be the guys stuck doing workouts in the endzone. I bet that black turf is hot as hell.

It wasn't very hot at all when I was on it yesterday, and it was in the high 70s. Then again, I wasn't in full pads running around either. :ugeek:

Ya know, we'll take that! the red is not going to please everybody. And its the FIRST of its kind so its def shocking to see. Hopefully is boosts attendance and leads to the video board and visitor grandstand. If those tthree things happen.. Ill call it a success. :thumb:

And if EWU goes 0-fer this year will you be calling for the "turf" to be pulled?

just call it seating expansion dont call it visitor side or away side that makes it sound high school. another question, why did they add seating in the endzone instead of on the "visitor" side which has plenty of room for addition? endzone is not good seats and seems unnecessary until you have over 15k or something.

ewu should add the same thing they have on the home side to the away side, then do endzone after that.
