Your Top 10 Picks and Sleeper

With a week or so to go until the season kicks off, I figured I'd make a list of my top 10 teams, screw the magazine and other polls. I also threw in a few teams that I think might be able to surprise some people and make a run towards the playoffs.

1. Villanova
2. App State
3. Montana
4. South Dakota State
5. James Madison
6. Southern Illinois
7. SFA
8. William & Mary
9. Elon
10. Northern Iowa

Sleepers: Wofford, Chattanooga, Montana State, EWU, Richmond, Delaware

Your picks?

And Sacred City and Liberty and Texas State (sorry, none of those are even close to being top 10) and CCU and NAU and...

Not a bad list, although the order could be argued ad nauseum. I'm not sure about the love for Richmond in some polls with a ton of lost starters and a new coach.

Yeah it will be interesting to see what Richmond does this season. A majority of their success will hinge on what Aaron Corp can do.

Do I believe Liberty will be a top 10 team this year? ABSOLUTELY! But do I expect other people to believe it who 1)have no idea what kind of football team LU really has this year, 2)think LU has lack of talent because of their beliefs, and 3)LU doesn't have the history to show they can be a top 10 team? No. As the season progresses they'll see LU is a top 10 team IF they live up to their expectations. But until then I don't expect many people to believe LU is a top 10 team.

Well our passing defense was pretty mediocre last year, due to injuries and having to insert some freshman into CB spots, which I feel is about the steepest learning curve in D1 football. We only allowed 2 rushing TDs all year last year, and return almost the entire DLine. Defense maybe take a slight step back overall, but I look for improved secondary play. It was sad last year that I would've much rather have had the opposing team in a 3rd and 1 situation than a 3rd and 12 situation, because we were much more capable of stuffing a short run than stopping a medium pass.

We have also been top 2 in Big Sky rushing the last 2 years, and we have a host of talented backs (although I'm not sure we have a gamebreaker, time will tell) and return a solid corp at OL.

The real question is, can we actually get production out of our passing game? If the Cats improve their passing game, which Kempt should be able to do (but if he can't, we are going with a RS FR who is right on the senior's heels), we could make some noise this year. We return every receiver from last year, the same QB, and have a new OC.

There is nothing wrong with calling us a sleeper, we were a win away from the playoffs last year, and if not for a "outbreak" of the flu, costing us both our P and or PK at the EWU loss (we went for it nearly every 4th down because we had no punter or placekicker. We had a DLmen doing kickoffs) as well as several other key players, we could have very well been in the playoffs. We have a lot of returning starters on both sides, especially offense, and I look for significant improvement in that area.

If they beat Ball St AND JMU then I think they've earned there top 10. But when i say top 10 I mean 9 or 10. probably 10. With a win over 1 of them I'd say top 15. Losing to both of them would put them right back at top 20. We'll see what happens.

I still think nine months is too soon to laugh at Weber after last year's playoff drubbing. Take it easy on 'em.

With Liberty's schedule they had better win 9 games to be anywhere near the Top 10
