The lack of UNI players on defense is suprising to me. I know we lost some key members (Q. Scott, Mahoney, Hodge) but Jamar Thompson is going into his 4th year starting and has been just as big of a force on defense as anyone the last 2 years.

I would also add that the difference from second to fourth is 8 points....Seems like outside of SIU it is pretty wide open for a couple of teams.

I would say that the whole darn thing is wide open this year. But thats just me. I doubt we have an undefeated champ this year.

1-2 are SDSU and SIU's to lose.

3-6 are up for grabs with MSU, ILSU, UNI, and YSU.

I saw an error in you post and fixed it for ya.

3-6 are up for grabs with MSU, ILSU, UNI, and NDSU.

Anyone ruling out UNI needs to educate themselves a bit.

I think the preseason poll looks great, but may have been based on last year a little too much. SIU is definitely yhe favorite, with a strong year expected from SDSU. Illinois State is some hopes, dreams, and expectations. That said, I agree with their placement. UNI looks great at the skill positions and has some big guys in the lines. No reason they shouldn't be in this race.

Realistically, the Bison will be doing well to finish 6th. Maybe if they get YSU at Fargo for homecoming they can pull it off, otherwise I'm thinking that they still have a few years of "seasoning" before they're ready to be a contender in the MVC.

I agreee that reports of their death are exaggerated, and I don't see SIU as the solid favorite that the pollsters do. I think the road to the MVC title will go through Normal.

The experts haven't got SIU right for years now, so I'm a little worried about being installed as the favorite, given what we've lost.

I think the preseason polls look the way they should. This is gonna be a fun year. Besides SIU and SDSU, everyone else is kinda unkown.

The polls give us something to chat about. NDSU was picked 1st and 4th the past two years, and we all know how that ended for the bison. I like how NDSU's schedule is set up this year. It sucks playing at UNI for the 1st conference game, but it's prob the best time to play them. We'll be on game #2 and it will be UNI's 1st.

With my green and gold glasses on, NDSU finishes 2nd or 3rd and exits in a second round playoff loss.

Realistically, i think we finish either 6-5 or 7-4. Football season can't get here fast enough.

preseason polls are about as valuable as elimination game threads.
just something to pass the time/talk about while waiting for the season to start.

I'm sorry but I am laughing my butt off over NDSU needing a few years of seasoning! What they need is a new coach! It's so funny because their 3rd or 4th year of being in the FCS they were ranked #1 in the FCS but couldn't contend for a playoff spot yet!
They went 10-1, even beating U of MN, and Central Michigan....who was their one loss? Glad you asked: S-D-S-U! Go BIG! GO BLUE!! GO JACKS!!!!

If they'd been in the MVC they would have been 7-4. :coffee:

if we'd have been in the MVFC in 07 we would have been 10-1 or 9-2.

Bad news out of Youngstown from last night, two of our starting linebackers have left the team, one due to grades (Taylor Hill-Michigan transfer), another due to disciplinary reasons. Unless we get a couple LB transfers within the next few weeks, we will be starting two freshmen this fall. One being Ali Cheaib from Florida and another being Thomas Sprague from Florida, each who are poised to have big careers at YSU, but also who will need some time to learn the system.

YSU's reaction to the 7th place ranking: http://www.vindy.com/news/2010/aug/03/w ... -the-love/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Youngstown State football coach Eric Wolford called his team’s preseason conference ranking embarrassing, disappointing and disrespectful. He didn’t call it unfair. “I think it’s embarrassing to the whole community and embarrassing to Youngstown State,” he said. “It’s disrespect. In some parts of this world we live in, if you disrespect someone, you may lose your life. “Right or wrong. I don’t handle disrespect very well. I’m sure my players won’t either. That’s why we’ve got a job to do.”
Now you guys see why we love our new coach  !

So it's now disrespect to vote a team that has been bottom half bad the last couple years as a bottom half team? That's like me saying people picking Michigan to finish bottom half are disrespecting them. Until you actually prove something don't be pissed about the "disrespect".

MSU's reaction:

Missouri State football coach Terry Allen believes his team is better than it's fifth-place slotting in the preseason Missouri Valley Conference poll released on Monday.

"I feel we have a chance to finish among the top two or three," Allen said.

If so, the Bears' timing could be perfect.

"This will be the best team we've had since I've been here," said Allen, starting his fifth season. "How it equates to wins and losses, we'll see.

"But I think we finally have some pieces in place to make some noise."

UNI a little low, but otherwise not bad. Should be a good race for the title with Ill ST and MSU improving.

I looked at that schedule that you played that year....not real impressive. The highest win total that you faced was a 6 or 7 win Cal Davis, maybe Cal Poly, team if I remember correctly.

Even less impressive is the 10-1 record in 2006 when you played Concordia St. Paul (Division 2, finished 5-6 that year they did. They also have been 10-24 in the years since then), and another schedule full of teams that were 6 or 7 win teams...at the most.

YSU's head coach sounds like a moron in those quotes. Why is everybody getting disrespected these days? Sounds like something that somebody would say on MTV's Real World.

If they have to start 2 true freshman linebackers, seventh place is exactly where they will be.

SDSU beat writer broke down the quotes from the coaches on his blog today. All good stuff. Trent Miles remains hilarious.

This x100.

YSU finished 6th last year, a 7th place prediction isn't out of the ordinary. The preseason predictions are pretty close to the final standings last year actually

is UNI having an off year? 4th seams low. What is up with Youngstown? They have had a lot of good teams. Why are they won of the lowest teams in the MVC?
