Cuts at Davis

Interesting stories today on athletics in California. Turns out UC-Cal is running a 11 million a year subsidy to athletics (so much for the wealthy Pac-10) while Davis is still short 2 million even after cutting 4 sports, one of which was "women's wrestling". Women's wrestling?! Davis is still under fire for Title IX programming. I don't see Davis moving to the WAC anytime soon.

The womens wrestling thing is a typo, its mens wrestling. The only womens sport to be cut was rowing, the other three were mens sports.

The elimination of the four sports programs and their lack of athletic funding has been used to discredit any move up talk regarding davis.

Well, if the ladies aren't wrestling, then they need to be - the more jello/mud involved, the more sports they'd support...

And if they did a special calendar or rap video like the GLOW rap (Zelda was singing her lines to me...) well then you'd probably be able to reduce tuition campus wide...

Holy Cow, Herky-Jerky! Are you serious?

frinq was incorrect in stating in his post that women's wrestling was one of the four sports cut this year. However, the initial article mentions women's wrestling:

"The university has been sued multiple times under Title IX, a federal law that requires schools receiving government funds to provide athletic opportunities for male and female students in proportion to their overall campus numbers.

A federal appellate court ruled in February that the university's decision in 2000 to cut women's wrestling was symptomatic of its poor performance complying with Title IX."

That was not a typo. UC Davis had a women's wrestling club team back in 2000, as referenced in my prior link:

http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/search/news ... so?id=8006" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Women's wrestling was identified as having "unofficial status" during the years that Burch was the head coach. Fewer than 10 women ever expressed an interest in wrestling during the years that Burch was coach. Those who did participate never wrestled for UC Davis in a dual meet, and they wrestled unattached when they participated in the Aggie Open tournament.

Women's wrestling is not a sport sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and it is not sponsored by the Pac-10 or Big West Conference, to which UC Davis belongs.

Might I suggest that you, 1.) thoroughly READ all posts and links, and 2.) take your meds.

This thread would get a lot more action if there were an 'n' in the Subject line... :coffee:

I think a lot of people are mistakenly believing hot chics are the ones wrestling. I highly doubt women of this caliber are wrestling, now football on the other hand...

I would still pay to watch this, for all the wrong reasons. I would, of course, pay more (much more) if they added mud and/or jello and/or Crisco to the mix...

My 17 yo son used to wrestle for his high school team, and they had a very attractive young lady wrestle for them - she always wrestled against boys (and always lost), but I credit her for doing it and more importantly making it through the practices. Anyone, male or female, committing to those practices will end up in pretty decent shape, unless we're talking sumo...
