NCAA Rules Changes

The NCAA released a series of rules changes for various sports on Friday...two that directly impact FCS football...
The cabinet forwarded two recommendations related to its review of Bylaws 17 and 31 to reduce costs related to administration of championships and playing and practice seasons. The cabinet supports prohibiting institutions from providing accommodations to their student-athletes on the night before home contests in FCS football
Cabinet members sponsored legislation for the 2010-11 legislative cycle to increase the number of student-athletes allowed to practice before an institution’s first day of class to 95 in FCS football starting in 2011. Currently, FCS football teams may have a maximum of 90 participants.

I'm confused. Does this mean that on-campus student-athletes are to be turned out of the dorms for a night? Are jock dorms (a thing of the past at the schools I've been resident at, but might still be in force elsewhere) to be banned?
If that's the case, it makes no sense whatsoever. If it merely means the practice some pro teams have of gathering everyone in a hotel, that's cool for me. I'd rather stay in the dorm, anyway. But that might be impractical for schools with off-campus stadia.

Sounds to me like the NCAA doesn't like the notion of putting the home team together in a hotel the night before a game. Precisely because professional teams do that, and we're not supposed to be professional?? Why else??

FBS teams can still get the hotel. (I'm pretty sure the U of Iowa does that). The ban would be on FCS teams doing the same thing. Don't really know how many FCS schools actually do that, though. Heck, more often than not, UNI doesn't even get hotel rooms for ROAD games, let alone at home.

Are you saying that UNI buses to road games the day of the game? I highly doubt that.

Cost.

I think some conferences want this to be the standard rule and therefore they have gone to the NCAA to try and get this done across the board so that their conference isn't at some disadvantage.
Its a stupid thing, but its minor in relation to the other issues the NCAA needs to consider.

Depending on start time we do indeed still do same day games. I know Western Illinois a couple years ago, and I believe the night game at South Dakota State a couple years ago were same day games. I'm 90% sure that the Iowa and Iowa State games are one day games as well.
Iowa does do the hotel room thing, but not in Iowa City. From what I understand they use a hotel in Cedar Rapids.
I will also add that I have spoken with some former players who have said even the games that UNI heads to on Friday, Farley doesn't let them stay on Saturday night, they leave for home right after the game regardless of what time it ended. A couple years ago when we went out to SUU the team left at about 3 or 4 PM on that Friday and were back in Cedar Falls by 3 or 4 Saturday night/Sunday Morning.

That's terrible for the players if UNI does bus the same day. They're definitely in the minority of FCS teams in that regard.
I would say that most teams don't stay over the night after a game unless its for travel reasons (flight times, etc..).

From what I understand the bus games would be something like a 5PM or later start at Iowa, Iowa State, Western Illinois, or South Dakota State.
University of Iowa is about 90 minutes
Iowa State University is about 2 hours
Western Illinois University is about 3-4 hours (220 miles ish)
South Dakota State is about 5.5 hours (350 miles but pretty much all interstand/4 lane high way.

Liberty puts the team in a hotel the night before home games.

I don't know how many FCS teams put up the team at a hotel the night before home games, or big home games. I'm sure this is just a cost factor, as someone above has said.
Most players hate having to do this, because they don't get to hang out with their friends after say 8pm or so, participate in whatever activities may be going on, and sleep in their own bed. Coaches did and do this to keep the team away from campus activities on big weekends, and to exert control over what the players are doing the night before games.
I think it's a great idea to ban this practice, but not for the financial reasons.

We've done it the past 2 season and, personally, I think it helps and I happen to like it. However, our coach raised the monies for it so it didn't come out of the University's coffer. Is that going to be disallowed also?

Not EVERY road game, but certain ones they will do w/o an overnight stay.
Especially if they are flying somewhere. I believe the coach has even used the term "commando raids" to describe those type of road trips.

The way I read it, it doesn't matter what the source of the money is...it's going to be banned...

I'm not sure if Sac State does this but I think the NCAA has better things to do like ban sayings on eye black and enforce penalties on celebrations.
A school should be able to put its team up in a hotel if it has the means to do so. Also why this is in effect for FCS schools only makes no sense.

We even go halfway to VMI the night before and they're only an hour away.

What does UNI do on the road? Take tents and camping equipment or sleep in the bus?

What happened to that rule that FBS teams had to have a certain amount of wins from an FBS team? Sounded like they would not want to play FCS teams in the future because of that rule, if it was passed.

Love the 2nd new rule, don't like the 1st. Are they also saying an alumnus can't foot the bill ($4,000 or whatever) for the Friday night hotel? That can't be classified as an "extra benefit", can it?

SD: While obviously I can't speak for the past two coaching administrations, we did NOT do this during the Volek adminsitration, at least during the 3 seasons I was in the program. We did not do it at UOP (FBS at the time), either. I don't know if costs were an issue or if it was just never contemplated. We just didn't do it.

Unless that alumnus is willing to pay for a room for each and every student...then it's an extra benefit...
But the rule does ban the INSTITUTION from the practice...
