Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College football team has been picked to win the Northeast Conference by The Sporting News Preseason Football Magazine. In addition, quarterback Nick Doscher has been tabbed by the magazine as the league’s top offensive player.

In earning NEC Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-NEC honors a year ago, Doscher led the Seahawks to a 6-5 record and a 5-3 league mark, which was good for a tie for third place. Doscher’s 769 rushing yards set a Wagner record for a quarterback.

Interesting pick.... I wonder sometimes when a conference race is not all that clear if these rags just pick a team that is not too far out there in order to generate water cooler buzz. I'm not sure who I would pick to win the NEC, but as well as Bobby Mo was playing at the end of last season, I might tip my hat to them as the "darkhorse" pick. The early season Robert Morris / Dayton game will be telling for both teams. My 'bold" NEC prediction for 2010 is that SFUP will not finish last in the conference this year! Yep, you heard it here first! As for Wagner, I think they have a great shot at being the NEC's first ever FCS playoff team. It will be interesting to watch this year as the top NEC teams have something to actually compete for finally....

Wagner's soph QB, Nick Doscher, gives the Seahawks a real good chance of winning the NEC.

Wagner is a safe choice. Very good QB in Doscher.

The problem is the Wagner O and D lines were not very good at the end of last year. Albany's very young line manhandled them on both sides of the ball last year.

I think RMU is the pre-season favorite.

The jury is out on Albany still. New QB. New RB. New WR. New LBs. Should be interesting to say the least.

I think Wagner is a good, solid choice, but they do have question on defense and the O-Line.

Albany has to be right there at #2, but they have a lot of new pieces to add to the puzzle.

RMU is a darkhorse and finished strong last season, but I think their QB play is uncertain.

CCSU just lost so much to graduation, so I understand the preseason pick, but I predict they are a legit contender.

The rest of the poll is about right ... I think it's a 4-team race and the AQ has upped the stakes!

I like CCSU to be the team to beat this year. After seeing Wagner play two years, nothing about them really impresses me.

Now if we can only get Wagner to travel 50 miles East! Would to see that home and away series start up again as well as Fordham. Think both teams would be a good local fan draw.

This poll is as good as anybody's guess for the NEC in 2010.

My bold predictions...

The 2010 NEC Champion will not go undefeated in conference play.

It would not surprise me if the 2010 NEC Champion has two losses in conference.

It would not surprise me if the 2010 NEC Champion (and first-time NEC representative as an AQ in the FCS Playoffs) is decided by a tie-breaking formula.

While I won't be so bold as to predict a Duquesne championship, I feel very safe in predicting that the Dukes will be vastly improved over their injury-riddled 2009 season.

The NEC (very much like the PFL) is stepping up its game across the board and becoming much more competitive.

2010 should be a great season for NEC fans.

Although NDSU hung a bunch on them last year Wagner was a good young team. They had a nice offense that could score points and if memory serves me well finished in the top 25 FCS teams. The Seahawks just might pull it off.
