For the first time in nearly three decades, followers of Liberty Athletics will hear a new voice on the radio airwaves next year, as longtime play-by-play broadcaster Jerry Edwards has announced his retirement from the Flames Sports Network.
“Words cannot express the deep appreciation and gratitude we have for what Jerry Edwards has done for Liberty Athletics,” said Jeff Barber, Liberty University Director of Athletics. “He has been a pioneer for our program and his tireless contributions will never be forgotten.”

He has seen it all.
I absolutely love Jerry Edwards. He may not have been the best play-by-play guy at the end of his career, but he was one of my favorite people to talk to. We laughed so much at the stories he told when we were filming that interview that's on the video. We're posting a video on Facebook tomorrow that shows him talking about two games that almost never got broadcast and the story is so much fun to listen to. It's like your grandpa is telling you stories at dinner.
You don't see people stick around for 29-years very often. In those years, he missed one football game. He called something like 326 out of 327 games.

Nice!

It's great when a community can get together and identify with a voice for a program. Congrats!

Jerry was definitely the "Voice of the Flames". It is well known within Liberty circles that Jerry was very dedicated and traveled to most of the games on his own dime for many years. I hope we find another one that will stick around for years to come.

In this video, Jerry tells the story of two games that almost didn't get on the air. They're definitely entertaining to listen to.

Other than the 'C' he gave me in sportscasting class a quarter century ago, I would have a tough time saying anything negative about Jerry. He's a prince of a man and has created quite a legacy in Lynchburg.
