EWU announces starting QB

No big surprise, as everyone pretty much already knew, it just wasn't official. SMU transfer Bo Levi Mitchell will be the guy to continue the line of great QBs at EWU in recent years (Josh Blankenship, Erik Meyer, Matt Nichols).

With the starting quarterback position secured, it’s all about finding depth at this point in spring practices.

The Eastern Washington University football team will have its 15th and final spring practice Friday (April 30) at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center practice fields, and will spend the last half of the session scrimmaging with younger players. The practice was originally scheduled for Thursday, but head coach Beau Baldwin delayed it by a day to help the team be fresher for the scrimmage and hopefully avoid rainy and windy conditions.

Baldwin said the Eagles will be looking to solidify their depth at all positions as starting positions in most areas are now secured. Included is quarterback, as Baldwin made the expected announcement that Southern Methodist transfer Bo Levi Mitchell will head into the off-season as EWU’s starter.
...
Mitchell secured the starting position with outstanding performances in three spring scrimmages. He completed 24-of-36 passes (67 percent) for 352 yards and three touchdowns -- all to sophomore Nicholas Edwards -- with just one interception. He helped the White to a 20-0 victory over the Red in last Saturday’s (April 24) spring game, completing a pass for 61 yards to Greg Herd on the game’s first play before scoring on an 8-yard scamper.

Matt Nichols tore it up against Suck last year. Well, pretty much everyone did. Can't wait to see last year's 100-something ranked D go up against the likes of Andrew Luck, future top 5 pick.

He's the real deal for sure. Just as accurate, if not more so (especially on deep balls) than Nichols and Meyer in the pocket. I don't think we're going to miss a beat from last year. We'll put up points against the pack for sure, but they'll put up a lot more. Our D still needs work.

Accurate at throwing HALF the time to his team and the other half of the time... to the OTHER team. You haven't seen him in true game form. Your scrimmages don't mean anything. Nor do your practices. 24 Scores and 23 Ints his first year, 12 tds and as many ints before getting benched. Injury shminjury. If he's the real deal pal, he wouldnta lost his starting spot at SMU. Wait til he's getting rushed, then come back and tell me he's the real deal!

Look forward to reading about EWU football this fall.

Welcome ETG.

I don't know a whole lot about SMU, June Jones or C-USA, but BLM won't exactly be going up against FBS D's this year (except for Nevada). His track record in HS speaks for itself, and I've heard the offense at Katy was very similar to the spread we run up here at EWU, and very much unlike what JJ has going over there at SMU. Time will tell how he does, and I'm damn excited to watch him go up against Big Sky competition. :thumb:

He went up against that great Pac-10 powerhouse (chuckle) up there, WSU and threw 4 picks against, without question, THE worst defense in the nation. If he was the real deal, as some of you suggest - how did he lose QB1 at SMU? And don't gimme that "injury" bs. Was about to be benched, not gettin it done. Period. Look, good luck. Better your problem now. I'll take it back if moving down was all he needed to do, but I'm not optimistic for yall. As soon as he learns it's a team sport and not all about his ticket to the NFL, well perhaps.

BLM did single handedly lose that game for SMU, there was no question about that...2 terrible INTs returned for TDs and then also a pick on his first pass in OT. And yes, he did throw a ludicrous amount of interceptions at SMU, I don't think there is a single SMU fan that is sad that Padron is their QB next year and not BLM. With that said, the kid does have talent, although definitely not the strongest arm, and I imagine that another year under his belt will help cure his interception woes. He should be a solid QB for EWU, not as good as Nichols and Meyer (but really, how many guys out there are better than those two?) but I think he'll flourish getting to play against Big Sky defenses.

Jones used to run the run and shoot at Hawaii, from what I've heard, he did bring it with him to SMU (after Davis and Glanville went to Portland State). The run and shoot is supposed to be a quarterback's wet dream (put up some gaudy statistics). Makes me wonder. Then again, I took a wait and see approach on Taipei Jones, and he did pretty well. As you know, team scrimmages are a whole lot different than real life.

The red/white game however was run as a game, with the team split up into two. I know, still not the real thing, but for how short of a time he's been here, he's looking pretty good. I really don't think there's going to be much of a drop-off in QB play, but, like I said, time will tell. Even if he does start to falter, it's only going to give TJ more carries which will be dangerous for any team that plays against us.

In the past I've seen plenty of FBS transfer QB's hyped-up and a lot of them didn't pan out. Blankenship at EWU in 2002 was an exception.

Although I think it's clear BLM has some serious potential, I also know that EWU has had huge success with home-grown talent at the QB position. As much as I hate to admit it, this, along with the fact that we have only ever had one FBS transfer QB at Eastern makes me somewhat skeptical. EWU fans need to have reasonable expectations about BLM. I don't care who you are, nobody is just going to walk in right off the bat and be the next Meyer or Nichols.

Hopefully he will resemble what he looked like at Katy, and not so much SMU.

As far as EWU qb's go..... Nicholls was my least fav. 3Ints, same route, same def back. :coffee:

Then there's the JCs coming in. PSU has one coming in, Colin Ramirez, that also has a reputation to fulfill; he threw more yardage at his JC than Rodgers, who also came out of there. Have no idea if he'll fill the shoes of Kavanaugh. It still wasn't settled after the spring game. A sophomore and freshman were close behind him. We'll be passing more this year, after leading the nation in rushing last year. Probably.

But aside from that at he was probably the most accurate and smartest.
