Well, the ND State Board of Education voted to officially retire the nickname today. This sucks balls.....

"The State Board of Higher Education decided today to retire the UND Fighting Sioux logo and nickname and directed Chancellor Bill Goetz to so advise UND President Robert Kelley and urge him to begin the transition"

Any ideas on new possible nicknames? Or any ones the school is considering?

This sucks ass. Why in the fuck should any team change their name? Who gives a shit.

There's plenty that have been thrown around as message board speculation, but officially I haven't heard anything, since it really is becoming official today. I'm not sure how they are going to decide the new name either.....

Illinois is fine. Since one can argue that Illini is just a shortened name for Illinois. They just can't give it any Native American connotations (like mascot, etc). Plus, we were smart enough to make sure there were no survivors to protest them name down the road (just kidding, folks).

Now Indiana, Indiana State etc - the NCAA should make them change their name to Whita, Whita State, etc.

I remember there being a pretty funny thread on UND's message boards a while back about possible replacement nicknames. I enjoyed the Cavalry the most out of all of those suggested, just for the irony of the whole thing.

I think these nicknames would be a good fit for the new mascot, sucks to see the Sioux one go really liked the logo. Also the fact that your arch rival NDSU is called the Bison, made the sioux fighitng the bison look really cool:

Vikings, Gauls and Norse are out. As soon as the indian nicknames are gone, they are coming after those next.

So I guess the "Fighting Blackjacks" would not be allowed either.

Not all tribal members at Spirit Lake or Standing Rock were for this. In fact right now there is a petition with around 1000 signatures on it at SR to take a vote on this.

BTW one of my relatives is Bennett Brien, a Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa artist who designed the logo displayed on UND uniforms and throughout the Engelstad Arena. He is pissed about this also.
