You guys thought the signing of Andre Dawson was big at Northern Iowa, but watch out: YSU has signed a Rivals 4-Star RB out of Dunedin, FL: Adaris Bellamy. Bellamy had previously committed to South Florida, but they told him they did not have a scholarship for him so he ended up here in Youngstown. As late as last week, rumors were swirling he may end up at Cincinnati.

This has got to be one of, if not the, biggest signing of 2010.

Three weeks after signing day, YSU coach Eric Wolford has added another top recruit.

Running back Adaris Bellamy, who signed with the University of South Florida in 2009 but was told last month there was no longer a scholarship available to him with the Bulls, will sign today with the Penguins, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

Bellamy spent last fall at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, which is the same school former Ursuline High standout Jamel Turner is attending. Turner signed with Ohio State earlier this month.

Originally signed with South Florida. When Skip Holtz came aboard, his scholarship was taken away because they wanted to get some of their own recruits on board. He really did nothing wrong, USF just wanted to move a different direction.

He was then set to sign with Cincinnati earlier this month, but according to his high school head coach, there is a Big East rule that prohibits a kid that signs a letter of intent with one Big East school to play at another Big East school.

In the end, he is a PENGUIN! In addition to the USF offer, he had offers to Mississippi, Clemson, and Iowa State.

Stars....mean....nothing. Carry on.

Holtz was hired before National Signing Day. Had Bellamy already signed or did he sign with South Florida anyway... knowing they didn't have a scholarship for him? He's a moron if it's the latter.

Great pick up for you guys he looks like he will/could make an immediate impact on your team. The Guins i have to say did a great job in picking up a coach that knows how to recruit just like us

He would have played on FUMA's PG team, (my HS team plays there HS team every year) which is a Div I recruiting mecca. They sign a couple doz guys every year to Div I, and have dozens of Div I scouts travelling to Fork Union, VA every fall and winter.
"FUMA has had 70 players drafted or signed by NFL teams, with at least 30 players making their way into the starting lineup of a regular season game. FUMA has seen 10 players selected in the First Round of the NFL Draft since 1954, 7 players selected to one or more Pro Bowl appearances and at least 12 players on teams that played in Super Bowl games."

Most of the guys who play on FUMA's PG team initially don't qualify academically for schools they were being offered. Not throwing stones here- JMU has at least 2 players from FUMA, both of whom were starters last season, So corner Taveion Cuffee, who played as a true freshman in 08', and So LB Jamie Veney, who also started as a true freshman in 08'. Course coming from FUMA doesn't mean guaranteed success. JMU had a 3rd who came in with Veney and Cuffee, another LB, who also may have played as a true freshman but had a shoulder injury in camp, was redshirted, and was subsequently kicked off the team last offseason for undisclosed reasons. When guys arrive to Div I schools after a yr at FUMA, they are technically true freshman, but they are really more like 2nd yr college players in that they have practiced and played against college level competition for a yr (against other PG, JUCO, and JV teams), had a season in a college level weight program, and at least a semester to bone up on academics in a regimented military setting.

Here's an article that mentions the post grad team sending 2-3 doz a year to Div I, and 5 from the HS team signing Div I LOIs. (among them one ironically is the above mentioned Jamel Turner from Youngstown who signed with Ohio St, and another who signed with the Citadel.)

hmm. FUMA was in my high school's conference. What school did you go to?

4 stars before committing. Once he signs with an FCS that will drop to 2 stars in a hurry (if not 1 star). Ratings are based on what schools are interested, not on talent.

So if UD signed a 4 star blue chipper (Rivals named I think it was only 26 five star and 300 something 4 star) you would say it means nothing, carry on? Yeah, right...

I could say if you said, 2 and 3 stars mean nothing, carry on. But when you get to the 4 and 5 star guys (less than 400 total) the blue chippers that get numerous top 25 BCS offers, you can't say that means nothing.

There aren't too many 4 star that ever set foot on an FCS campus. Recent ones in the last 2 years are:
-Pat Devlin
-Aaron Corp
-Mike Paulus
-Tyrik Rollinson who just announced he was transferring to SHSU.

Perriloux is the only 5 star I know of who transferred down.

I have a hard time believeing there wasn't something more to it. Looking at the 09' Rivals running back rankings (85 listed ) and All Purpose (30) and 09' (75 and 50) the only 2 I see going to USF are a couple of 3 star All Purpose. USF isn't at the level where they'll just dump a 4 star running back recruit. Teams, like USC, FL, Tx, yeah. USF, no. Last 2 years there have been only 3 five star and 25-30 four star running backs. Even if you include All Purpose category its still less than 40. Rivals had Bellamy as the #29 ranked HS running back in 09'.

There has to be something else- either he didn't do nearly as well at FUMA as people thought he would, or he got injured, or there was an off the field issue, or something.

Yep, Ohio Hen is wrong here. He was a 4 star coming out of HS. That will not change whether he is a total flop at YSU or wins the Payton. Same goes for the other 4 stars who transferred down. Perriloux is still listed by Rivals as a 5 star. Devlin as a 4 star:

I have worked for rivals and typically he is right. It's all about who is recruiting you when it comes to stars

The how come all those 4 stars who have transferred down, Devlin, Corp, Paulus, etc are still listed as 4 star, and Perriloux as a 5 star?

Because once you sign rivals doesn't update/care about your recruiting profile anymore.

Did he sign a loi at USF? Yes he will be shown as that but would be a 2, 3 if lucky, if he committed to ysu first. Which goes to show its about who is looking at you, not talent a lot of times
