Great nickname...and Stetson University is considering brings it back to the football field as a non-schooly FCS team...
Athletics Director Jeff Altier said Thursday he is forming a select committee to evaluate a recommendation by a university committee that football be brought back to the school. The Hatters last played football in 1956, and Altier said it usually takes a minimum of three years from when a decision is made to start a program and actually play the first game.
"We're gathering information," Altier said. "The recommendation in regards to football is to further study the feasibility. We're going to move very quickly on this (evaluation process), probably after basketball season."

The Hatters have had some discussion with the PFL...

Another FCS option is always good for the state.

That would be great - and another push for a southern division of the PFL.
Current:
Jacksonville
Davidson
Campbell
Potential:
Stetson
Mercer
Who else?

Just typing the same thing.
The beginnings of an Atlantic Sun non-scholly FCS conference are starting to take shape.

I know nothing about Stetson University and its history...so reading the posted comments after the story was interesting...
One of note came from Lance...
Football is an unecessary drain on aready scarce funds needed to educate future leaders. Besides, it is a violent form of modern day gladiators that only serve to boost the un-needed testosterone level of male student athletes at this liberal fortress of academia. Stetson should do more to enhance the needs of women's studies; gay, lesbian, and trans-gender programs; and development of the arts. Let's leave football to the corrupt institutions at Florida, FSU, Miami, USF, and UCF. Stetson should be reserved for those students whose sensitivities require an environment more conducive to passive demostrations of advocating social issues, the arts, and other like activities.
I hope this is such a minority view and that there are not enough people on campus to sway the choice against football...
I especially love the comment about "the corrupt instatitions at Florida, FSU, Miami, USF, and UCF."

There are those types on every campus. I bet I could find 100+ at UF that would say the exact same thing.
It actually almost sounds like satire, IMHO

Rereading it, I can see a possibility of satire...
Hope that's it...

OTOH this
column, which opposes starting football at NAIA Ave Maria University in Naples, mentions "The whispers are getting louder that Stetson will leave the Atlantic Sun Conference in coming years because of the cost of D-I athletics"

He also mentions FGCU, which is in the A-Sun, and a desire for Ave Maria to be in the Atlantic Sun with them...
And he was unimpressed with a PFL crowd of 5,000+ at Jacksonville.

At least Lance was smart enough to list the most corrupt on first.
