ESPN broadcaster Colin Cowherd will return to Eastern Washington University in April to serve as host of the 29th Annual Orland Killin Dinner, Dance and Auction, and has also pledged his support of the "Red Turf" project at EWU's Woodward Field.

Cowherd attended Eastern from 1982-86 before embarking on a more than 20-year professional broadcasting career. He was sports director of Eastern's on-campus radio station, and was a broadcaster for a variety of Eastern athletic events on both radio and television during Eastern's transition to NCAA Division I. He is formerly from the coastal town of Grayland, Wash., and graduated from Ocosta (Wash.) High School in 1982 where he was an All-Far West Conference guard in basketball.

He has pledged $50,000 toward the previously-announced addition of red synthetic turf at EWU's Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash., which will be the first of its kind in the entire country. Michael Roos of the NFL's Tennessee Titans and his wife Katherine pledged the first $500,000 toward the unique project. The Killin Dinner, Dance and Auction is presented annually by the Michael Roos Foundation, and Roos will also be on hand for the events taking place April 23-24.

Jeez, Jalmond did you have a run-in with Colin when he was in Portland?

He's not a reporter. He's a radio talk show host and ( like him or not ) a damn successful one who's affiliation with EWU will increase exposure and fund raising. Sorry you don't approve.

This day and age, there is not much difference between a sports reporter and a sports talk show (and now, a show on ESPN). Cowherd has gone so far as to claim the Pac-10 as the weakest conference in the BCS, that the FCS is no more than a glorified DII affiliation (complete with a playoff system and FBS recruiting rejects), compared Appalachian State's win over Michigan to Azuza Pacific beating USC, that ESPN should not "waste" programming on any FCS coverage, and that scheduling FCS should automatically exclude a FBS school from contending for the BCS national championship, none of these by the way are backed up by any shred of fact from Mr. Cowherd. Better FCS discussion from any of these two FCS sites than there has been from Mr. Cowherd.

Advocating FCS football is not his job. Creating mass appeal for his radio program by being provacative is.

He's the sports talk version of Rush Limbaugh, complete with - as you suggest - outrageous opinions most of which are not "backed up by any shred of fact."

Fair enough. We'll see how funny he is when he's "poking fun" at the new red turf at EWU the same way he's done about Boise State in years past.
