Record-breaking Eastern Washington University quarterback Matt Nichols still has his work cut out for him, but at least he's getting noticed.
An appearance at last month's East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla., has opened the eyes of NFL scouts and draft analysts. In fact, ESPN will air highlights and discuss Nichols in the segment "NFL Draft Lab" on Monday (Feb. 15) on the 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. (Pacific time) SportsCenter broadcasts.

One thing mentioned in the article that I was surprised about, was that neither Nichols nor Overbay received a combine invite. SmallCollegeFBFan, could you comment on that? I remember you reporting that Overbay had received an invite.

Just so you know I don't read all threads but I do try to read draft related threads. Maybe we should have a Q&A thread where people can ask all of this type stuff so I can make sure I don't miss one of these questions. Glad you asked.
Nichols is a PFA in my mind. He was solid and showed he belonged in the Shrine but the QBs are so bad this year that it did not take very much to stand out. I think he could possibly make a practice squad though and I would not be shocked if he went late but I would try to get him as a PFA, if possible.
I was told by someone who works with Overbay's agency that he was going to get one and that they thought he got one. Turns out he did not. Overbay is a player that I would be shocked to see get drafted based on what teams have said but he sure was productive in college and could be a situational 3rd string TE.
You never really know what will happen on draft day though and to be honest I would be very careful listening to McShay, Kiper, etc. They say a lot of things that are nowhere close to being true. Also, remember that both have close ties with certain agents and thus will over hype some as a favor and then not hype others to slight an agent that the agent they are friends with does not like. People would be surprised at how the relationship of a media member and certain agent can affect the attention that a certain player gets by that media member.

And Colin Firth will be on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson on Monday (Feb.15)
Not that this has anything remotely to do with this thread but I just figured I could piss some people off with this little item.

Gotta love the objective media guy.
That's fuckin' BS if you ask me.

The guy is 6'3" 220. That's a good sign for any NFL QB prospect. Big QBs from small colleges have a good track record of success.

I know that is surprising and I am not saying that every person in NFL Draft media is very tight with agents or only pubs players of certain agents. What I am saying is that many people at ESPN, NFL.com, etc. have agents that they will do favors for by giving certain players a little extra mention sometimes. Then there are also those relationships with NFL teams. There are some teams who don't talk to anyone and then some who are responsible for leaking rankings from scouting services and then they provide many of them with projections on players.
People would be surprised to see how many players, especially small schoolers, who are rated and the draft website has never seen them play thus going off what they hear on certain players. For example, Tony Pauline at TFYDraft.com did an interview on a website and there were some small schoolers he was hyping for next year and I know Tony has been around since the 1980s and he knows what a NFL prospect looks like. He mentioned some players that have no chance next year going mainly off what he was told by someone who obviously does not know. Just like Mel Kiper is very tight with a couple big name agents and you will never see their players get questioned. I don't know this for sure but I would bet that Kiper does not have a good relationship with Jimmy Clausen's agent. McShay either really like Clausen or he knows his agent well. My bet is he knows the agent or is just bad at what he does. A lot of NFL people think Clausen is going to be a bust. It is truly a minority number of folks who like him as a first round pick, although it only takes one team so he could very well go in the first round.

Actually measured at 6'1 3/4 220 at the Shrine Game. Still at 6'2, when you round up, he is big enough to not be written off as too small. I really like him as a developmental prospect. If not drafted he will get signed very quickly after the draft.

FIFY.

Don't know why colleges round up those numbers. But, he's still big enough. If he has the arm and interviews well, he'll get plenty of attention because, he has the size and a very good college career.

Just saw a small piece on him with Mel Kiper and Todd McShay on Sportscenter. McShay likes him and thinks he's a pretty good quarterback, and he might be able to start in the NFL in a few years.

The next Tony Romo.
It was cool seeing footage of a couple games in Cheney and the one at Qwest Field in Seattle on ESPN. Very cool!

Jessica Simpson should be giving Nichols a call any day now...
