Apparently San Jose State wasn't a big enough cupcake...

Because the Sun Devils of Arizona State have replaced 2-10 San Jose State (ranked #138 by Sagarin, wins over Cal Poly & Utah St., arguably the worst team FBS has to offer) with 2-9 Portland State (ranked #191 by Sagarin, wins over UNC and Southern Oregon, arguably the worst FCS team West of the Mississippi) to start their 2010 season.

Dennis Erickson must be concerned about job security...needs at least ONE guaranteed win to start the year. A game that would have had 15,000 empty seats will now have 30,000 empty ones. Brilliant move by the ASU strategists....

Maybe ASU should move to the BSC? They ARE 3-0 against BSC competition since 2005. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Do you have reason to think that coach Erickson had anything to do with this decision?

Do you realize that, generally, athletic directors set up the football schedule--not the coaches?

When it comes to major football/basketball programs, all schedules are approved by the coaches.

DE approved this, heck, probably instigated it.

Might have to go see this one :)

It's truly embarrassing.

ASU has NEVER had a real challenging OOC schedule:

2000: SDSU, Colorado State, Utah State (3-0)
2001: SDSU, SJSU, Louisiana-Lafayette (3-0)
2002: Nebraska (blowout loss), EWU, UCF (2-1)
2003: NAU, Utah State, Iowa (21-2 loss) (2-1)
2004: UTEP, Northwestern, Iowa (3-0, the last good Dirk Koetter team)
2005: Temple, LSU, Northwestern (2-1)
2006: NAU, Nevada, Colorado (3-0)
2007: SJSU, Colorado, SDSU (3-0, DE's one good season, with Koetter's recruits)
2008: NAU, UNLV (L), Georgia (1-2, losing to fucking UNLV....)
2009: Idaho State, La-Monroe, Georgia (1-2)

So, in the last decade, ASU played 4 traditional powerhouses (Nebraska, LSU, and Georgia twice) and went 0-4. The rest of their OOC schedule, aside from victories over Northwestern (2 times), Iowa in 2004 and 2 BAD Colorado teams is just damned embarrassing. It's no WONDER they can't compete in the Pac-10.

This is really strange. ASU is also playing NAU the next week.

They can count only one FCS win. Makes no sense at all.

Fucking hilarious that a griz fan is giving another team shit for having a wimpy OOC schedule.

C'mon now AZ be fair. SJSU dropped ASU so they could open at Alabama (bigger paycheck). That left ASU needing a game to open with, and there are exactly zero FBS programs that needed a game on Sep 4.

So, I kinda think they didn't have much of a choice. But I'm not in the atheltic dept at ASU, so who knows?

Says a fan of the team that lost to D-II Chadron St. in 2006 and UNC a couple years ago? When you're at the bottom of the shitpile (like the sCats) EVERY TEAM is a challenge. The Griz don't have that problem. ASU is much like the sCats....forever trying to BUILD a winner.

MSU's battle cry: You just wait 'til next year!!!

All I know is this: I feel for programs that have to whore themselves out in an attempt to make financial ends meet....

The following is a partial list of FBS games being played by JUST BSC teams in 2010:

Utah State
Georgia
Washington State
ASU (PSU & NAU)
Michigan State
Oregon
Stanford
Boston College
Texas Tech

Portland State ALONE now has ASU AND Oregon on their schedule. Weber has Boston College AND Texas Tech. NAU has ASU. Plus they all have to play Montana!!! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Z, I thought the BSC had a general problem of BCS schools scheduling them. :?

U of Washington got tired of losing to BYU every year, so they cancelled the rest of the contract so they could add Eastern Washington and from what I understand, Portland State.

In all fairness, U of Washington was one of only three programs to have never scheduled an FCS team until now, and they usually have a fairly tough OOC schedule.

Nobody wants to play Montana. Especially for the $750,000 it'd take to get them to come to their place. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Georgia doesn't play any Big Sky teams this coming season... you have them on your list.

NM, you are correct. I was reading the conference affiliations incorrectly.

I think Portland State will eventually be a better contender in the Big Sky in a year or two. Coach Nigel Burton knows what he is doing and already has recruited a solid class to help install the Nevada Pistol Offense at PSU which will give PSU an advantage against more cumbersome opponents as speed is the key and the traditional 4-3 on defense will help PSU's rushing defense woes. Looking forward to seeing the Vikings in action in 2010 :thumb:.
