what's the outlook for the hornets this year? Since the MEAC hasn't announced their team for the MEAC/SWAC challegne I'm still assuming it's DSU. Right now I have no clue what to expect from Southern.

In their defense, of the sixteen HS'ers and three transfers UD just pulled in, only two were from Delaware. There are only 45 schools playing football in Delaware, so the pickings are slim.

I know. Most of the key UD players over the years have been out of staters as well. I was just a little suprised that there were no Delaware players on the list. Maybe I shouldnt be.

Especially when they are verbally to USC before they even get to high school.

He'll burn out and return to UD like the other 13-year old college recruit Elena Delle Donne.

I'm expecting us to be in there at well. Due to the fact that Southern was originally scheduled to face FAMU on the 4th, and now that the Rattlers are playing Miami on the 2nd, that leaves them open. DSU and FAMU have traditionally (which blows my mind) faced off in the first game of the season, giving us an open date as well on the 4th. So if the Challenge is supposed to be on Sept 4th this year...you do the math.

Kamal Abrams (QB) from Dover High is on the short list to sign with DSU in 2011, right now its between us and UConn.

But I agree with you that neither DSU or UD recruit very much in-state. That needs to change for any sense of a "rivalry" to develop. Problem is that most of the better athletes and players are from the surrounding states (Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey). Delaware isn't known to be a hot-bed of recruiting.

But that's the thing - there's just only so few players in Delaware of the necessary caliber that it won't ever change. When you have such a small pool of players, and when it's not unheard of for kids to want to go a little farther away from home for college, it just means you will only see a handful of DE players on either UD or DSU. And frankly, it's not that different than the regular student bodies of both schools - the vast majority of kids at both schools (~2/3) are out of state kids. So most people who go to UD or DSU are only in the state for the 4-5 (or longer for some) years they are in college, and then they go their separate ways. That's what will be the most implacable obstacle to a real rivalry ever developing - most intrastate rivalries involve schools with populations heavily pulled from the states in which the schools reside. It's hard for so many kids from other states to get excited about a rivalry exclusively in Delaware.

I agree. Should Delaware and Delaware State play each other? Yes, absolutely. Is it a "rivalry"? Not in the slightest. Newsworthy? Yeah. Interesting matchup? Of course. But no rivalry going on here. Thats just media hype.

IMHO it won't become a rivalry until DSU wins a game in the series.

IMHO it won't be a rivalry until both teams can claim that a majority of the victories by the other team were "fluke wins"

It will be a rivalry soon enough, as long as they continue to play every year. What is needed is a big controversy or feud.
