Ouch, that's pretty brutal. Makes me happy that my employing school has minimal dependence on endowments. Of course, our institution has its own issues with government cutbacks.

Harvard's endowment was down by over $8 billion at one point -- about 22%. The plans for the new Allston campus are on ice now, and there are staff cuts and wage freezes. Haven't heard about sports cuts, though, except maybe in the area of recruiting travel budgets.

Dartmouth is going through the same thing.

I guess that is the problem with huge endowments, they will take huge hits. At least total number wise.

Yeah - depends on how you look at it.

IMO, these schools still have more than enough money in their endowments to keep everything the same. That's the reason for an endowment....security.

They just use the big #'s as a scare tactic.

percentage wise, most schools around the country that operate with an endowment have taken similiar hits. I tend to agree with a previous post that the big numbers are being used to propogate someone's agenda. 700 million is A LOT of money but when the endowment is over 2 BILLION it's not as telling as it would seem.

That's true in Harvard's case. The fundraising pitch is that all alumni financial cotributions go for financial aid, so if you don't give, you're a Scrooge keeping a poor kid out of Harvard. Now, if they called me and said that they were redoing the seats in Harvard Stadium, I'd give enough to have a section named after me. "The Ivytalk section." Nice ring to it!

How about everyone who attends Brown pays the full tuition?

The importance of an endowment fund cannot be underestimated. If a fund is down by 20% the management of the funds is open to question.

But the question for us -Do our colleges have endowment funds for our athletic programs and if not, what are we doing to start them so that in 10 yr or 20 yrs or 40 yrs the programs won't be subject to the fluctuations in the economy. Athletic Directors want to spend every penny they can. We as fans are concerned about the long term stability of our football program.

Imagine if our football program was receiving $500K - $5M / yr. We could afford to maintain and upgrade our stadiums and training facilities.

I think some athletic departments and football programs do have endowment funds. I think I remember hearing that William & Mary has an endowment which covers the entire cost of scholarships on a yearly basis.

I've heard from numerous sources that Albany is about to roll out an fundraising drive to specifically raise funds for a scholarship endowment fund.

It is crucial, especially for state schools who have little or no say in their budgets on a yearly basis.

Then Brown wouldnt get all the best and brightest students- just those that can pay 50k per year.

Brown can afford to give tremendous amounts of financial aid and allow great students to attend at a rate that they can afford.

Ending financial aid would destroy all elite colleges have worked for since the 60's-- get the best and brightest rather than all trust fund babies from Andover and St. Paul's. etc.

How about forgiving some student loan debts...that would be one of the best stimulus ideas

Ya that would be nice. A lot of people would have a few hundred extra dollars a month to pump into housing, cars, etc.

That would create a cash infusion into the economy much faster than stimilus.

Could you imagine the uproar if that was propsoed? People would say that the prez is pandering to elitest college graduates

Don't Ivy League schools usually sponsor about 30 sports programs?........poor things.
