Dupree said Monday he was also offered a scholarship by Navy, and he said Citadel coaches told him the Bulldogs will run a "Navy-style triple-option offense."
Guess with the graduation of Roberts, El Citadel is changing things up to play to their strengths.

The rest of the SoCon better invest in some shin guards if El Cid is going to go for the kneecaps like Navy does.

a couple things on this one:
1)they've just killed their recruiting. They have to compete with Georgia Southern AND Wofford for players now
2) Starks is a beast, I can't say I disagree with the move with the talent they have

Going to be interesting with all the triple options in The SoCon

at this point Wofford runs it the best (we were still in the top 5 in rushing--maybe even finished first) despite being 3-8

I love the Navy Triple Option.

Should be interesting to see how they manage the current roster... I feel like this year will be more of a hybrid offense.
At least we get to practice on Chowan for our first game...

We have a lot of question marks with this up coming season. Looks like we are having a personality complex, and are unsure of where we want to go with this offense. Agree with '99, it will be a hybrid offense. Our offensive coordinater has never run the triple option, so i'm a little concerned.

I had dinner with bobbythekidd tonight, and the triple option was one of the subjects we discussed...with GSU bringing it back...Wofford running it now...and The Citadel apparently moving in that direction, could it become easier for the other teams in the SOCON since they will see more of the Triple Option???
Navy and GT have had success because they pretty much have a lock on recruiting and conference/OOC play at their level...has there ever been a conference with three teams running the Option more or less the same???
This could be interesting to watch...

Won't now every Div I military school now be running the Triple Option or some variation of it (like the flexbone)? Army, Navy, Air Force, and VMI already run it.

We can scratch one military from that list. Sparky Woods has canned the triple at VMI in favor of an as yet undefined "more balanced attack".

The rumor is that El Cid was trying to hire Brent Davis away from VMI to install the option at El Cid. Davis had a bunch of success with the GSU option for the Keydets. Those plans fell through when GSU asked Brent to come back to GSU this year leaving both VMI and EL Cid w/o an offensive scheme.

I don't think The Citadel moving to the TO will impact their recruiting due to competing with GSU and WC any more than running a spread hurt their recruiting against all the teams that ran the spread. If it hurt recruiting on one it will hurt recruiting on the other.
The teams that are successful in a big way with the TO are the ones that find the stellar QBS and running backs and can properly train their lineman in blocking for the TO. In the past, teams have switched to the TO because perfect execution gave them the advantage over more talented teams. El Cid may be thinking in that direction.

When Navy does their traditional cut blocks it is always fun to watch as they use their opponents size against them. One of the things i fund humourous is how so many other teams/coaches complain about this offense as a "cheap shot" offense. Well it isnt, the only reason they complain about it is that they cant stop it

. When they cut block they are showing that they intend to block that way and since they are a military academy are very disciplined in the way the do it as i have yet to read about a major injury caused by it this year, and for that matter in years past. Way to go El Cid! This is a very smart move.
The Triple Option is the best offense in all of football and i hope to see good things coming out of their soon, they should have an easier transition then most what with them being a military school and all (discipline us a must when running this offense) and this offense will benifit them in terms of how they have a harder time recruiting then most schools

.

Agreed. At the El Cid/Samford game, the Citadel successfully pulled off the Triple option twice, which kept them even as they were sucking. This would be an interesting change.

A good idea. The Citadel has no weapons at running back and below Blanchard has no one at the QB position. Blanchard was out versus GSU and I saw El Cid's backups and it wasn't pretty. (BTW, that game between GSU and El Cid had the fewest total number of points ever scored in a game in Paulson Stadium). El Cid will almost certainly have a dismal year of offense if they stay with the system they have.
The Citadel always has disciplined players who can execute well and I don't see how they can't have the kind of success Wofford has had if they run an option offense and run it well.

Oh, great. They will end up like Army did when Rick Greenspan canned Bob Sutton and the 'bone in the late 1990's. West Point football has still not recovered.

Mon contrare. In RBs we have Dallas (Jr next yr) and Jones (So next year) returning. We also have Anderson (RJr next yr - if he stays heathy) and Remi Biakabutuka (So next yr - brother of Tim who played 5yrs with the Panthers). Remi actually played in our game against NC and showed some inside running quickness no one expected. Yes, on the QB end we are really in a hurt. Blanchard is graduating and foregoing his 5yr, Starks may not be returning and Edwards, who you saw play QB in most of the game against GSU is questionable in a TO offense, but he has good instincts for a frosh and will only improve with time. I agree with you that if we stayed with the spread we would probably be looking at another dismal year and The Citadel football fans are happy we are dumping most of it, but I imagine some of it will remain because that's what the HC and OC know best. Recruiting wise we have commits from some very promising option type QBs, and given our returning RB corp, we have a chance at a better season in 2010 then I imagined at the end of the 2009 season given the QB situation and the loss of Roberts to graduation.
I'm glad to find a new home to read and post about FCS football.
