Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams said it best during last week’s press conference, which officially introduced Willie Fritz as the new head football coach.

“It is a great day to be a Bearkat,” Williams told the audience at the Ron Mafrige Field House.

For the SHSU administrators, faculty, coaches, fans, student-athletes and boosters on hand for the announcement, it truly was a great day to be a Bearkat.

Williams and university president James Gaertner talked about the decision to hire Fritz.

“I can’t tell you how pleased personally I am to have coach Fritz here,” Gaertner said. “He has been successful everywhere he has been. He knows Sam Houston. He went over to Blinn and won two consecutive national championships over there. He went up to (Central) Missouri and really turned the program around.

“I’ve been told that when he was here and coaching our special teams was when we really started blocking kicks. I know he can coach and he fits in well. I just love his personality and his can-do attitude and I’m just sure he is the person for the job.”

Fritz was hired after spending the past 13 years as the head coach at Central Missouri. He went 97-47 and guided the Mules to the Mid-America Athletic Association championship in 2002.

Their main concern is the coach hasn't been as good in more recent years. I think were looking for a home run when it came to a coaching hire. But thats how everyone feels when they start the hiring process after many average seasons.

Looking at what hes accomplished on the D2 level and the JUCO level, I say its a pretty decent hire. Seeing he won some JUCO titles at Blinn should help his recruiting. Blinn is only an hour and a half or so from SHSU.

With this hire - I think we were looking for something in between Larry Coker (a well known entity, now at UTSA) and Ray Woodard (Lamar's hire - who the heck is that?!? is what we all thinking).

Did we get that? I think so - at least for SHSU fans. We know who Fritz is. He served as an assistant at Sam previously. He also had success at Blinn JC and unlike Woodard, has been a head coach at the Div I or Div II level. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable hiring a guy that's best coaching job was a JUCO head coach. There is some credibility there with Div II.

DHKAT is reporting on KatFans that we already have one or two Blinn JC guys. Blinn does have great teams and it is a short drive over. Most of those Blinn guys are from SETX and the Houston area, which need to be a recruiting base for us.
