San Marcos — Texas State thought it was on the express lane to repeat as Southland Conference champions in 2009.
The Bobcats returned the core of their squad and only graduated a handful of players in the offseason. Granted, one of those departing seniors was All-American wide receiver Cameron Luke, but they felt those returning receivers were talented enough to step up in his absence.
If Texas State’s defense played marginally better than it did in 2008, the Bobcats would be in great shape.
Well, the Bobcats soon found the road to a repeat to be filled with axle-breaking potholes.
Texas State was ravaged by injuries and lost two standout players before or during the season (defensive back Drenard Williams and running back Karrington Bush). The loss of Bush proved to be the toughest, as the Bobcats couldn’t establish a running game after he went down for the season against Nicholls State.
