Anatomy of a Track Meet: SDSU @ Montana

How do two teams, both ranked in the top 10 in total defense, end up in a 61-48 shootout? How are 109 points of offense scored when neither team breaks 400 yards in total offense? Here's how:

SDSU's had two TD drives of 11 and 2 yards. They had another drive of 3 yards that ended in a field goal. Another TD was the result of a 63 yard pass play in which the receiver was tackled at the 2. That's 24 points on turnovers deep in opponent territory/broken plays.

Montana's first two TD drives were a whopping 18 and 25 yards. They returned a kickoff for a TD, and returned an interception for a TD. That's 28 points (in 4 plays) off of turnovers deep in opponent territory/special teams.

This game should have been a 33-24 score, which would have been right in line with other Griz games this year against an above-average opponent. The fact that the offense, when it NEEDED to, generated five STRAIGHT TD drives (sandwiched around the kickoff return with the interception return as the exclamation point) and the defense served up 6 straight drives beginning with 2:20 left in the 3rd quarter in which SDSU generated a whopping total of 61 yards of total offense is what begat the miracle comeback we were fortunate to witness.

The same Griz offense that went 3 plays/interception, 2 plays/fumble, 4 plays/punt, 6 plays/punt then reeled off consecutive TD drives of 12/62, 11/79, 8/66, 4/52, and 5/41 in times of 4:13, 3:05, 2:15, 1:19 and 1:34. Truly an offensive performance for the ages, and one that I for one was CERTAIN the Griz (and specifically Andrew Selle) did NOT have in them.

Whatever happens this weekend in Washington Grizzly Stadium I'm just glad I'll be there to witness it.

Great post, Z. To me the most amazing thing is the fact that SDSU had only given up 41 second half points the entire season up until this game, and we managed to put 47 on them in the second half. Those 6,000 odd fans who chose not to show up this weekend missed something truly special.

Nice work dude
This qualifies for Griz Football related post of the year...
I was wondering yesterday what the score would have been if one removed all the short fields and turnovers and sure enough - you posted it up

I'm just trying to make all the (now nonexistent) Rabbit fans feel better about giving up 61 to an inferior Big Sky Conference team. :kisswink:

Well, I guess thats the difference between Griz fans and most other teams' fans. Go check the message boards in the days after the Richmond loss last year. :thumb: :thumb:

Griz posters won't go anywhere..much to the dismay of wideright!! We fans have seen enough wins and losses to realize it is a game, however, if the Griz lose it is usually by a quality team playing a tough game. SDSU almost pulled it off and if you have I would have given your team the credit (not like the posters on the JMU board last year)

AZ, why do you feel the need to poison a perfectly fine well? The Jacks fans that I have any contact with here or on AGS have always been a good group of guys. Some of the conference mates have been Jackasses but not the Rabbits. Unless one of them comes on the board and takes a shot then I don't see any reason not to be gracious. That would be a tough loss to take for any of us and the ONLY reason a lot of Griz fans would be on the board is to commiserate about some bullshit that happened in the game. There would be so much whining that I don't know if I would want to be on here even to congratulate the winner.

Around these parts we have always been taught that there is 60 minutes of football to be played. We didn't realize it ended at 1/2 time in the CAA. We apologize for not knowing that. :thumb:

   I accept your apology. Thank you :thumb:

(btw to Griz fan's who don't know I'd say the Griz are probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite team when Nova is not in it... this is mostly all in jest.... except for you guys being a bunch of can't read whiners  )

Alright but the kiss wink comes off as assholish when combined with the verbage used. At least it did to me but I have the advantage of knowing you.

I think you should apologize just the same. See how my apology to WR totally turned the tide in that one?
