I was listening to Jim O'Day commenting on the selection committee and how they work. He mentioned, that even with a possible 3 home games, Montana may only break even by going to the NC with the cost of sending the band etc. I know there are minimum guarantees per round but the NCAA gets a % of the gate, no matter how big, and the guarantee is only if no one shows up. I tried the NCAA website but can't find any info. Any one know how much the NCAA pimps off the schools?

The NCAA gets the ticket money from what I understand and the only money made off of tickets that the University gets to keep is the service/processing fee & Credit Card charge for the processing. The Universities also get the money from concessions and the swag they sell at the game.

The playoff games do some good for the local community though because each home playoff game brings in about 7-8 million for the community from a news report I saw.

It may help the communities but if you host 3 playoff games and only make, for example, $100k (I think that is the number they used for the cost of the NC to UM) selling trinkets, Coke, Hot dogs and hats that is pretty poor on the NCAA's part to shut out the schools. It is not like the NCAA is spending a whole lot of money promoting the playoffs.. Also, O'Day said that in Missoula's bid for the NC they guaranteed the NCAA over $300k for the game. If the NCAA is not making some money off these playoffs they need to get a new CFO to run this organization.

It is an interesting setup...other than the local broadcast that a team may have this weekend, the NCAA pays to produce all the TV...so when, for example, ESPN broadcasts the NC or semi games, its an NCAA production...they pay ESPN to do the game...the NCAA picks the announcers, etc...ESPN sells some add time, and the NCAA sells the rest plus pays for the crew, satellite, etc...

They pay for the travel teams and I think they pay some for the bands, at least to the NC game...

Looking at first round sites (average because they have 2 separate prices) and guessing attendance of approx 70% of average capacity you get...

1) Montana $29 tickets with 18,000 = $522,000
2) App St $20 tickets with 18,000 = $360,000
3) Richmond $16 tix with 5,600 = $ 89,600
4) Villanova $16 tickets with 5,800 = $ 92,800
5) McNeese $18 tickets with 11,000 = $198,000
6) S. Ill $20 tickets with 7,000 = $140,000
7) SFA $20 tickets with 6,000 = $120,000
8) W&M $22 tickets with 6,500 = $143,000

$1,665,400 for the first 8 games. That is a lot of money, even taking out expenses for charters, that the NCAA could make with TV revenue. O'Day said that it costs $65k for SDSU to charter to UM and $165k for UNH to charter to McNeese. Lets say it also costs another $5k for food and lodging. Montana and App alone make some money for the NCAA and this is just first round #'s

And I don't know about the other places, but you used the low end ticket for W&M...I paid $27 each for mine...so the take is even higher...

Why are we talking charter flights? What's wrong with using coach on an already scheduled flight? The unpaid publicity of having the team travel in team gear would be tremendous.

How do you think they pay for that huge staff in Indianapolis that issues all those fine rulings that we constantly bitch about???

Blame it on EWU. I am sure that their investigation cost them at least $1m to find they did nothing wrong...

I read over on eGriz that the NCAA's takes 80% of the gate...I guess that is better than taking it all...

Are those actual playoff ticket prices? I know in '05 our GA tickets were $8 and they jacked them up to $12 for the playoffs. (Now they are $13 for the regular season so I bet they'd get upped again...if ever we got there again)
