McNeese State: 1995-1997

Ok McNeese fans, explain something to me. How did your team go 13-1 in 1995, with their only loss to Marshall in the semi finals; then finish 3-8 in 1996 with only one FCS win; then resurge for another 13 win season in 1997, and another loss in the seminfinals?

What happened to McNeese in that 1996 season?

Just looked at their schedule real quick. Take out the UNI game and they lost 7 games by a total of 33 points... If I had to guess I would say they lost a player who was a huge part of who the team was... Say what Oklahoma has suffered through this year.

Of course I could be wrong.

I can't say. Perhaps McNeese75 can answer but we had a somewhat similar situation. 2005 we went 11-3 (semi-final run) then lost 29 seniors - going 5-6 in 2007

That's what happened to us during the transition from the Erik Meyer/Eric Kimble era to the Matt Nichols/Aaron Boyce era circa 2005-2007. We made the playoffs in 04 (8-3), 05 (7-4) with the very talented Jr. and Sr. teams, then they all moved on and we had a mostly freshman team (who are all seniors this year! ), a bunch of whom had their first starts against #6 West Virginia, and then a good Oregon State team. We went 3-8, but by the end of the season we were losing close games. Everyone knows what happened in 2007. 8-3, Nichols busts out for 3700 yards, 34 TDs and only 9 INTs after throwing a school record 17 the year before. Not to mention knocking off unbeaten #2 McNeese State in Lake Charles.

Ahhhh, the memories.

oops, that s/b 2006...then coach bailed on us right before signing day the next year. went 4-7 in 2007. Thought I should correct that.

Kids that where fr/soph in 2005 were jr/sr in 2008, when we got back to a winning season

And your last coaching change was...when?

TXST is on its 4th head coach since 2000 and have had 3 diff D co-ordinators in the past 4 years. It takes a toll.

IMO the biggest reason was

Kerry Joseph

The all time best QB at McNeese (before our current QB broke all his records) was a senior in 1995. There were a lot of talented seniors on the 95 team. The 1997 team was built around a very good defense and was accompanied by an offense that managed to score more than most of the opponents but the "D"took us to Chatty

Okay, I wasn't around here when this thread was first posted but I can answer that question.

1996 was what a lot of McNeese fans call our "M.A.S.H." year. We had a ton of injuries that year, especially on defense, including All-American safety Zack Bronson. When UNI kicked our tails in the UniDome, we had all freshman secondary playing at one time.

What was frustrating that year, all the conference games we lost were by less than a touchdown.

Doc

1997 National Championship
Youngstown State: 10
McNeese State: 9

They lost in the title, not the semi's in 1997.
