GPI- Nov. 17

Based on this the at-large bids look to be Richmond, William & Mary, UNI, Elon, UNH, SDSU, EWU, and Weber State. I think it is one off with McNeese State taking Weber State's spot so I think the GPI is going to end up predicting 7 of the 8 at-large bids this year. Of course, EWU and SDSU need to win this week or else that comes in to jeopardy. I also think that McNeese State better win or else they might get replaced by Liberty. If Montana State beats Montana I look for them to vault up in to the top 15 and get an at-large.

Again, 5 in the top 25, and the #2 conference ranking, and we have threads about whether the BSC will get a 2nd bid? :ohno:

McNeese and Elon should be nervous.

Those are threads though from us and based on past biases so if the committee does use the GPI as a serious tool then who knows...we may get a real surprise on Sunday.

UNI at 7...wow.

A big UNI win and a slight slip by a team just a head of them and UNI could jump to 5 or 6

UNI, with three losses, is gaining on undefeated montana in the ratings.

Hell no.

However, this backs up the UNI hosting senario though.

If Montana State wins they are in and if EWU wins they are in. I could see the BSC getting three bids before the Patriot League gets two or the Big South gets one.

The GPI is not always the best, but this week it appears to be the most accurate ranking available.

I didn't know there was a scenario where UNI probably wouldn't be hosting?

The GPI would however have nothing to do with them hosting or not, unless you mean a seed possibility.

I hate to see any of the top 20 teams from this week's GPI miss out on the playoffs, and look forward to next year's post-season expansion.

Is there a rule that limits at-large bids to the same number as the autobids? Does anyone think the FCS brackets will eventually expand to 24 teams?

At least 50% of the field needs to be resereved for at-large bids. You could theoretically have more at-large bids than autobids. That is an NCAA rule in general and not a football specific one.

I think the field will expand to 24. Remember, the PFL has requested an AQ for next year. So we may actually never see the field at 20. It may jump to 22 or 24 next year.

GPI is very close to my ballot this week. I have 23 of the 25 team in common. I didn't include NAU or UMass.

I have EIU much higher than the GPI (15th compared to 22 in the GPI) and the GPI has JMU higher than me (18 compared to my poll 22).

GPI is pretty good this week.

two points: okay three...

1) Penn at #24 makes me want to punch a baby... Harvard is the only Ivy team that looks good in the top 25 and has since 2001 been in there consistently

2) Big Sky teams in the top 25 (lots of 'em)

3) APP and Montana ranked right next to each other makes my heart sing..!!!!

Interesting. Thanks! I was aware of the NCAA 50% minimum at-large requirement, but unsure whether there could be more than 50% at-large playoff participants.

I am also surprised to learn that there could be more than 20 post-season invitations next year. When do you think we will find out? I suppose the format for 20 teams would be that 12 teams including the autobids would get a bye for the first round, and that the rest of the 8 at-latge teams bringing up the bottom would have a play-in round. For 22 teams, only the top 4 seeds would get the first round bye. Does that sound about right?

One nice thing about a potential 24 team playoff is that it would allow for a lot more cross-conference games in rounds one and two, even with regionalization.

I'm not sure when we'll find out about the field next year, but I imagine sometime in the summer after the NCAA annual meetings.

The only reference we have on tourney format for 2010 is based on ESPN schedules and what the Sporting News said in its 2009 FCS preview.

Putting those together indicates that the top 8 teams will be seeded and get byes. The bottom 8 teams will have opening round games on Thanksgiving weekend, paired by regionalization (no conference matchups). The winners of the "opening round" games will go to the top 4 seeds. The middle 4 teams will also get byes and go to seeds 5-8.

It essentially allows the NCAA to seed the entire field but not have to go through the hassle of ranking the full 20 teams. All they need to do if figured out the top 8 and pick the best 4 (without ranking them) of the remaining 12 teams.

In a normal year I see the opening round having matchups of AQ's from the NEC vs. Patriot, MEAC vs. Big South, and OVC vs. SLC. The last 2 at-large bids will also likely play in the opening round.

Of course a team like SCSU this year probably wouldn't have to play in the opening round and you could get more at-larges in the opening round. All depends on the year.

All really speculation though (except the dates) as the NCAA hasn't officially put their 2010 championship handbook out yet.

I don't have any babies for you to punch, but I sure have a cat that could use a kick in the ass.
