CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois quarterback Chris Dieker is likely out for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone.
The team said Monday that Dieker, a junior, will be sidelined for six weeks. He was hurt Saturday in the Salukis' 27-8 victory over Youngstown State.
The Salukis are 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Redshirt freshman Paul McIntosh of Evansville, Ind., will replace Dieker.

I agree. SDSU should have a much greater advantage with SIUs QB loss. I was sure UNI was going to lose to SDSU now SIU is at a huge disadvantage. What was once being treated by both SIU and UNI fans as a coronation of sorts is now heading in the direction of fighting to see which one gets the at-large from the MVFC.

Thats assuming either survives for an at-large...

SIU has two games left they should still easily win - SEMO and IN St. SDSU got much harder. Could Missouri State beat them now and finish 8-3?

Nice analysis, Jon!
This development could really mix things up in the Missouri Valley.

As much as I hate to see a player get a season ruined for himself like that, this really gives SDSU a better shot at the playoffs. And MSU a much better shot at upsetting SIU. Wow.

Yup. The SIU game is in Brookings, too! Nominee for Game of the Week on the 7th of November!

Reports of our death are greatly exaggerated. Freshman Paul McIntosh (xfer from Army) came in with the score 0-0.

He was Mr. Football in the State of Indiana. If SDSU wins, I doubt it will be PM's fault. I imagine that they'll be soaking their field and having every high school within 100 miles play on it before we get there. I still like our chances, regardless of what NDSU and UNI say about giving away the games..
What impressed me most is that when flushed out he scrambles looking to throw first. He doesn't have Dieker's cannon arm, but few do, and he has a lot of poise.

he'll need them!
(oh wait, SIU isn't the team that has pissed away the past few games)
(yes, I'm self-centered and focus on the mistakes my team has made in matchups with other teams of the same caliber. That, and I'm just making a dumb joke)

Nah, we'll just sit back and let the jacks beat themselves, like UNI did.

Well, I hate to throw away a potential excuse if we lose, but I work with a young fellow who rooms with one of the starters on the team and he says that the QB position was up for grabs until the final week of preseason. Granted, because of McIntosh's amount of playing time the play book won't be as open, but the weather and field condition are likely to narrow our offense down a little anyway, and McIntosh is considered more mobile than Dieker. This game will be trench warfare and I doubt that if we lose it will be the QB's fault.

More likely it will be the defense's fault. I just hope there is good footing.

I agree with native's Game of the Week thought. It should be when that week gets here. I feel sorry for Dieker in that he was really developing into a team leader. Missing half your junior year stinks. MacIntosh looks awfully well prepared to step in, though. The Salukis depend on a lot more than their QB which makes them still a threat. Their D forces a lot of turnovers and they still have the best running back in the country in Deji Karim. Don't write them off quite yet.
