If we didn't have some access requirement, you would see hundreds of spam threads.

You don't see the posts that we don't approve. As Jon said, it's to prevent spam.

I honestly never would have understood the background battle that goes on to try and keep a site viable for it's true members.

In short, yes, it is absolutely necessary.
