NoCo won't renew Scott Downing's contract

Post by BigSkyBears »

Per the Greeley Tribune, Scott Downing will not be renewed as head coach at UNC. Mixed emotions from me personally. We lost a TON of close games but couldn't get over the hump. He brought in true student athletes (UNC won Big Sky APR award) and the players like him a lot. But W/L's are how you're judged in this business.

Probably the best move.

Hopefully, NAU does the same to Jerome.

So is he done or does he have another year left? If he is done, who is the leading candidate to replace him?

He's done. Downing was signed to a 1-year extension last year.

Souers's contract is up, too. He got a one-year extension last year.

He could be in trouble. He didn't get a raise last year while the two basketball coaches did (coming off worse seasons).

Downing brought in a lot of talented players, so the new coach will have a lot to work with and administration has been making a lot of investment in its athletics program.

$16 million in our facility renovations will help.

Well, out of the bottom three that leaves Burton at PSU and most likely he will be back. Although we could end up where we were last year recordwise, the progress that Portland State made over last year is pretty clear. Some of us were acting like fans, thinking about a .500 conference record, but we are where I thought we would be realistically. Unlike under Glanville, the thinking is that the foundation has been laid for PSU to get back near the top of the conference where we were under Walsh. No reason to start over again.

So sad to hear about UNC's coach. It is nice to maintain some consistency among the coaching staff when you move up from DII.

There's no way Burton isn't back unless he commits a crime. If he wants to stay longer, though, he should probably stop making stupid "guarantees".

As for the top 6 Big Sky teams, the only coach that isn't safe is Souers.

It would be kind of funny if two coaches beat Portland State in their final game of the season, yet still get fired (Downing last week and Souers this week).

I think Burton did a good job, while you had some talent, JG really made a mess of things. Burton seems like a real class guy and a good coach, Im betting that if given a few years PSU will be in the hunt.

Pitiful that UNC didn't actually have the money let alone the balls to put a stop to this three years ago. Losing close games is no defense, in fact it is a primary reason to fire Scott. His nice guy demeanor rubbed off on his undisciplined players and they did not know how to win, and learned to accept embarrassment as the norm.

Question is, can the come up with the chips to hire a capable head coach?

As for the facilities improvement project, I hope part of that is to tear out the track around the football field.

Agreed wholeheartedly, Wedgie. I made the same point on e-griz yesterday. Guy went 9-47 in 5 years. There is NOTHING in his resume that would suggest this team was going to suddenly even start being a .500 team, let alone competitive. And moral victories only count in year 1 or 2.
