From what it sounds like by the daily recaps on ODUsports.com it sounds like Dom is having a pretty good camp these last two weeks and maybe even better than TD, he also had a pretty good spring as well. I think it was a smart idea that Wilder came out and said TD is the starting QB but another dilemma is coming up that really hasn't been discussed yet and thats the fact that will Wilder and the other offensive coaches in particular Whitcomb and Scott decide to redshirt him?
Demarco has two years remaining while Dom has three years remaining, assuming Wilder sticks with his decision and not redshirt him that will only give him one year to be the #1 QB on the team. The point i'm trying to make however is what do you do in this situation? You can redshirt Dom and give him an extra year of eligibility after Demarco graduates but what happens if Demarco gets hurt? That would only leave Reamon and no disrespect to him but thats scary to think of after it was being strongly considered by the coaches that he change positions. He also got hit pretty hard in the last scrimmage. I think they will also consider redshirting Manley as well since he's only a freshman and could use some time to get bigger and learn the system a little bit more.
IMO, they will not redshirt two QB's so therefore, I think they redshirt Manley. I think having a depth chart of Demarco, Blackman, and Reamon is better and safer than having Demarco, Reamon, and Manley.

ODU QB Dilemma
I'll save myself time from having to post this twice so I'll just quote it from MonarchNation.com....it talks about the decision that has to be made about our second string QB Dominique Blackman who has impressed the coaches in camp.

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
Have Dom practice as the backup and be ready to play with the #1s if needed. If not then he gets his redshirt year afterall. Seems to solve the depth and redshirt problem, unless of course he's just better than Demarco.futureodualum11 wrote:I'll save myself time from having to post this twice so I'll just quote it from MonarchNation.com....it talks about the decision that has to be made about our second string QB Dominique Blackman who has impressed the coaches in camp.

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
I think Dom has gotten some reps with the first team...I dont know, I could be wrong. It's a real tough decision to make because our current third stringer Tommy Reamon hasn't impressed at all since about the 2nd day of camp.
As for Blackman and Demarco, Demarco is the starting QB as well as on the Walter Payton Award Watch list but Blackman might be the better QB.
Redshirting Dominique Blackman would really set us up pretty well at the QB position for the next 4 years but I just can't help but think about what might happen if Demarco goes down with an injury.
Demarco is going to be facing bigger and better defenses this year plus with our depleted O-line he could easily get more banged up this year. I stand by my prediction that they won't redshirt him because Reamon is definitely not a valuable back-up

If Demarco gets injured you can always NOT redshirt Blackman and throw him in. WTF!?! Is there a limit on how many players you redshirt in a given year? I'm not aware of one.

No there is not limit and on top of that you don't have to "declare" anyone a redshirt year before the season or even during the season.andy7171 wrote:If Demarco gets injured you can always NOT redshirt Blackman and throw him in. I apologize Andy and will admit that I made a mistake.
I forgot that a redshirt can be taken off a player during the middle of the season.

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
but seriously, sounds like a good problem to have, lots of teams will kill for two good QBs. Hell I know some that would love one good QB.

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
I'm a little confused. I thought Blackman had three years of eligibility remaining when he came to ODU. If that's the case, redshirting him this year is not going to add any eligibility. Did he technically redshirt at Washington before he went to Jr. College? If he did, nothing is gained by holding him out this year.
Re: ODU QB Dilemma
Blackman played one year of JC ball before transferring to ODU, so he is a true sophmore. He could redshirt this year and have three years of eligibility.Tribe4SF wrote:I'm a little confused. However, for this to actually occur, DeMarco would have to be extremely healthy this season. The other options at QB are our over-hyped Tommy Reamon and a couple of true freshmen that were recruited to play other positions.

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
why did SF inject Washington into this thread? Did Blackman go to UW after his year of JC? If so, did he get redshirted then?
Why does everything surrounding Butterfly football have to be so confusing?

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
I haven't read this thread yet, but I'm guessing the dilemma is whether or not to wear the QB is going to wear his butterfly wings in an actual game instead of only wearing them in practice?
Re: ODU QB Dilemma
Blackman was originally (highly) recruited to play QB for Wahington. They changed head coaches and the new coach wanted to move Blackman to TE, Blackman wanted to play QB so he enrolled at a JC and then came to ODU.andy7171 wrote:why did SF inject Washington into this thread? So did he ever GO to Wahington? Or did the HC change come while he was still in high school.bigblue78 wrote:Blackman was originally (highly) recruited to play QB for Wahington. He never suited up for Washington, I believe he was accepted, but I can't say whether he actually enrolled. Here's the best info we have:andy7171 wrote:So did he ever GO to Wahington? Or did the HC change come while he was still in high school.bigblue78 wrote:

Well, he's a true sophomore now right? That means he would have been a true freshman last year in JC...so I'm guessing he never did play, let alone practiced at Washington.bigblue78 wrote:He never suited up for Washington, I believe he was accepted, but I can't say whether he actually enrolled. It's both a good and bad thing to have two great QB's on our team....Demarco is on the Payton Award Watch List but he might not even be the best QB on the team.

Re: ODU QB Dilemma
Just found an article that clarifies some of it. Blackman did not enroll at Washington in 2008 for academic reasons, so I assume he could take a redshirt year.futureodualum11 wrote:Well, he's a true sophomore now right?
