Patriot League Recruiting (Patsy Ratings) - Fordham

Post by carney2 »

FORDHAM = 28

C’mon, Coach Masella, is this all there is? The Committee debated long and hard as to whether this rating should be released. We should wait for the other shoe to drop, right? This is full ride, play for pay, scholarship recruiting, right? The thought was that Scholarship Tom must be holding out for FBS transfers. Or perhaps the Rams are pacing themselves – you know 15 per year so that they can become a force in some 6-man football league as it’s played out on the plains. Then cooler heads prevailed and two arguments came to the fore: First, it needs to be noted that the Patsy Ratings do not include transfers, so waiting for more transfers is pointless. Secondly, it is hard to conceive of a bevy of BCS misfits and malcontents descending on mailboxes across America to complete their Fordham paperwork so that they can play in a one-sided stadium in front of 5,000 or so against the likes of Assumption, Bryant and Georgetown. Say it ain’t so, Tommy boy because as it stands, this is a joke – and there shouldn’t be any smiles in The Bronx unless you really know that there’s more – in other words, if you know a lot more than the rest of us.

QUALITY = 13: A few kids who can play, including one who is a 2-star – rated as a QB, but recruited as a LB. Details and a comparison with prior years:
2010: 4 Rated (36%); 1 two-star
2009: 4 Rated (17%); 0 two-stars
2008: 11 Rated (42%); 3 two-stars
2007: 7 Rated (27%); 2 two-stars

In case you’re wondering what difference the transfers might have made, The Committee advises you to consider that there were only three (3!) transfers included in the Fordham press release.

CLASS SIZE = 0: 11 recruits.

DISTRIBUTION = 6: No RB, WR or K.

SPEED = 2: We shall repeat it every time, but the information in this area is sketchy.

TRIGGER = 1: Excluding the 2-star QB who was recruited as a LB and listed as a LB in the press release, we have one QB remaining, a 1-star.

JUMBO = 2: 3 OL, 1 at 270+; 1 DL and he is over 250.

NEEDS = 4

DL = 2 (of 5): 2 DL, one rated, but undersized (235) and the other an unrated jumbo.
QB = 2 (of 4): 1 QB recruit, a 1-star. Decent size and All-State/All-League.
DB = 0 (of 3): 1 recruit; not rated.

THE COMMITTEE’S ADJUSTMENTS = 0

Following the advice of former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz, “when you’re in a hole, stop digging.” There is no point making this any worse than it is. Tom Masella is the head coach of a D-1 college football program and deep down one has to believe that he has a plan. It is very difficult to see what it might be. If this class is what football scholarships produce, heaven help us. Fordham could have done – and indeed did do – better than this without scholarships.

You had it right with the first statement shown here. You can bet that he does.

As to their QB recruits, if you don't know that Griffin Murphy is a good prospect, then you shouldn't be doing these rankings. Basing them on Rivals and Scouts "ratings" ( what you really mean is "listings"), is laughable for all of FCS, but especially for the PL.

Mark my words - Griffin Murphy will be starting at QB for Fordham by the end of the 2010 season. He would be the PL rookie of the year if Fordham players were eligible.

Show me all the negative comments about Murphy. Quote it, chapter and verse. What you have is

"1 QB recruit, a 1-star." No lies; no defamation of character. The implied/omitted word in this phrase is "only" on front of "1 QB recruit," which is to say that if this is a screaming need (Skelton is gone), one probably isn't going to get it done. And, he is a 1-star from Scouts, and rated no stars from Rivals. Facts. I'm not disagreeing with your "laughable" comment, but point out that it is objective to a point and invite you to suggest something better.

Next we have "decent size and All-State/All/League." Another statement of fact.

Again where is the statement that he is not a good prospect? Where is it even hinted?

Granted, you weren't directly negative towards Murphy. I think my reaction is more to the negative judgement of Fordham's class without measuring the changes that come with the move to scholarships. "Or perhaps the Rams are pacing themselves – you know 15 per year so that they can become a force in some 6-man football league as it’s played out on the plains." Look around at scholarship recruiting at the FCS level and you'll see much smaller signing day classes than what is typical in the PL (W&M hasn't signed more than 15 in years). Fordham is undoubtedly implementing a plan that will spread their scholarships out over a period of years, and may well be granting scholarships to current players who were previously under the grant system. 15 per class is about what you're looking for, giving you 60 spread over four years. Partial scholarships are used less at more expensive private schools such as Fordham, which also serves to reduce the size of signing classes.

Tribe is right ..the Rival/scout are not accurate for most players ...most have NOT been rated or evaluated at all which defaults them to 1 star...
Murphy for example if you read it was NOT evaluated probabaly because he had a short JR yr due to injury
Bottomline is I know he was offerd in early Dec by CAA ..UMass UNH, URI and PL Colgate/HC and Lafayette ..they all saw something! and he chose Fordham over those schools so Im guessing scholarships made a big difference in getting the best QB in New England for Fordham, many say he is better than the kid Uconn took
