Playoff Scheduling

Big question here, at least big for me.

Everyone loves the hoops upsets like we just had today with High Point's 3-point specialist nailing a lay-up with 11 sec left to beat Wisconsin; it was WAY unexpected because he was 0-4 on 2pt shots for the entire season.

But if that's the case, why is there this huge aversion to even the possibility of an upset in football? Are the powers-that-be so scared of the upset that they'll use the potential for a blowout as the sole excuse for avoiding it by defining the upset out? This just doesn't make any sense to me. App over Michigan in the playoffs would be a-freaking-mazing, but they won't even allow that to be scheduled....
