ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit: With the College Football Playoff expanding next year, 'Don't play bowls'
“I think the 12-team playoff is going to create a lot of buzz. How many games will that be, seven total? You have the quarterfinals, the semis and the national championship,” Herbstreit said on ESPN this week.

“I think we’re headed to – I’m a college basketball fan, we all get our brackets out, March Madness…Tell me about the NIT, how’s that going for you? You know who is even in the NIT? That’s where the bowls are going next year. I think you eliminate the bowls. Nobody wants to play in them, don’t play bowls

“Don’t play bowls. We’ll have the 12 teams, we’ll get excited about those and if you want to add maybe five or six more bowls outside of that, then do five six. We’re getting to a point that is ridiculous. We’re putting 6-6 teams in bowl games nobody cares about.”
Add in the opt outs because of the transfer portal and non CFP bowls have almost become early spring games.

Do we really need them?

We certainly don't need 43 bowls. Putting in 6-6 teams is basically the equivalent of giving everyone a participation trophy.

While I would generally agree with that, we NEEDED those 6-6/5-7 spots to get in two very deserving teams who would have been otherwise shafted by the uncaring powers that be at NCAA HQ....

Couple of days ago JMU loses their 10th player to IU (1k+ yd soph WR), 12th overall (also lost 1 to Mich St and 1 to ULM). Gone from potentially 17 of 22 returning starters to 7. Of course have added a bunch of guys through the portal that I have never heard of.

Troy, 11-2 & 10-3 last 2 seasons, also portal gutted after Sumrall took the Tulane job.

Most SBC took major portal hits, but JMU & Troy certainly got hit the hardest. G5 is nothing more than the AAA of college football now (with P4 the Majors and FCS the AA). Really good players are gone after 1 season..Unrestricted portal & NIL has ruined college football.

JMU got Washington’s backup QB, 2021 starter. Granted, they were 4-8 that season.

Lost another to USF, although he was a backup corner.

So far there’s been a lot more ‘taketh’ than ‘giveth’ in terms of proven talent..

Couple days ago BC job opened up. Chesney was mentioned as a candidate by multiple legit sources. His buyout if he left JMU this year os 1.75 million (frankly not that high). Chesney has said he is not interested.

If he had left at this point in the offseason, 2 coaching changes in 2 months, that would have opened up another mass exodus of players, been not only a season killer, but gutted the program for several seasons. On top of the Portal and NIL free for all, would have been the straw that broke the camels back for a lot of JMU fans, including myself. I would have been looking at a lot more time and $$$ for other things to do in the Fall..

6 day old news, but boy Sean Elliott screwed over GST. Leaving AFTER Spring ball started to take a position job at a USC. Granted he never moved his family from Columbia. Now Spring ball at GST cancelled, and probably a large chunk of their team into the portal (they have a 30 day window after the HC departure).

This has to be a record year for high level FCS, G5, and even P5 HCs NOT FIRED but leaving to take position coach jobs at P4s..A # of them have also left late (Jan & Feb).

Stupid. You spend your entire career preparing to be a head coach, and then you quit to go back to being a position coach. Dumb....

App wins their first outright regular season basketball championship since 1978-79. It's been a fun season, but the conference tournament needs to be won.

And again. Quoted from the 2022 “ What is the Week 3 FBS Game of the Week?” thread
BDKJMU wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 12:31 am JMU's OOC schedule is filled through 2024 and looks like Liberty's schedule is set for next season, but at 98 miles, 1 1/2 hrs+ apart, its ridiculous that JMU & Liberty aren't scheduled in a home and home until 2033/2034. They should be able to work out at least another pair of games between 2025 and 2032..
SH, you can break out the pom poms..

The Wagner game though is stupid.

ASU vs ASU. Sucks App, good for JMU, as App had JMU’s # in the regular season.

#2 seed JMU (30-3) to face #4 seed Ark St in the final 7 PM tomorrow night on ESPN2.

Women’s final #1 seed Marshall/#3 seed JMU tomorrow 2 PM ECB on ESPNU

I see App is 27-6. Would then get an NCAA tournament at large with a win over #12/#13 Auburn and 2 wins over JMU?

I doubt an NCAA game is in the cards, but maybe an NIT bid. We'll see. A fun season despite the tough loss yesterday. Good luck in the final, Arkansas State is pretty good.

JMU is destroying them 87-58 with 5 min left.

31-3, most wins in the country right now, longest winning streak in the nation (13). App was the last to beat them back in late January.

Women’s final #1 Marshall 95, #3 JMU 92 (OT).

PS- At least it wasn’t 2 years no SBC conference championship game like in football (that was the SBC, not NCAA), and the NCAA didn’t screw JMU with 2 years no postseason like they did in football. Yeah JMU ended up getting a waiver for a toilet bowl. The basketball equivalent would have been getting a waiver for and invite to whatever is the lowest tournament (the CBI?), then the JMU HC leaving right at the end of the regular seasom 3 weeks ago, taking all but one assistant and a couple of players with him, and JMU getting thumped in the 1st round to some above avg mid major.

The JMU HC is apparently going to get poached, and JMU will lose a couple players to the portal to P4s because of bigger NIL $$$, but at least that wont happen until this upcoming week, or the week after if pull the upset this evening against Duke.

We’ll see what happens againat Puke. I saw the odds were something like 80/20!in Duke’s favor. Duke -7.5, I guess maybe that’s about like being a TD favorite.

I like the way they play. Guys give maximum effort the entire time they're on the floor, deep bench, sub frequently to keep guys fresh and able to give that effort. I'll be cheering for them.

Well that was an ass whooping of epic proportions. I don’t know how you dominate a 5 seed, then get completely destroyed by a 4 seed, unless the seeding was all jacked up.

Back to 49 weeks of not caring about basketball.

Like most sports, it's all about matchups. Wisconsin didn't match up with JMU very well whereas JMU couldn't have matched up with Duke any worse. JMU was a good team, well deserving of the bid and the first round win, but got dealt a terrible second round matchup.
