The JMU catcher has somehow passed away at age 20 right on the heels of being named CAA Player of the Week for her .788 average this past week with 7 RBI and 4 runs scored. JMU announced her death, but did not specify a cause.

Apparently, and sadly, it looks like suicide. I think even at the start a JMU player was commenting that you never really know what someone else is going through. There's been a rash of these lately among college athletes. I know my wife read a sad book on a track athlete from Penn who killed herself a few years back.

Indeed, and it's odd as men in the US are still 3-5 times more suicides than women. Maybe it's because of that that stories like this, of seemingly very successful women with everything, on the surface, going well for them, are the stories we are hearing.

After Katie Meyer's suicide at Stanford, the university has acknowledged a "suicide problem".

At the time of the announcement, there was no confirmation of suicide, but that HAS come since. How sad. Suicide whomps....

Damn. I saw last month that the softball team wasn’t doing well (compared to the last # of seasons) and hadn’t been on the JMU board in a week and a half, so I just found out about this. RIP.

The team has cancelled the remainder of the season. I can certainly understand that....
