NCAAF - 2022 Commits

Post by 89Hen »

Early signing day today and the Terps got some big surprises (at least surprising to fans). A couple days ago they were ranked as 13 of 14 in the Big10 for 2022 and jumped to #7. Still means they can't compete in the Big10, but at least they're heading in the right direction. :thumb:

Good for JSU, good for the SWAC and good for HBCU's in general. Who knows, could be something happening.

Again I wished that the SWAC was still in possession of its AQ PLAYOFF STATUS just to see these kids play top flight non conference teams.

Instead of sending it's second or third best team like this year. SWAC now 0-20 in the playoffs.

I agree if JSU had gone it would have changed history.

Nice haul for Neon Deon.

Hornets loaded up on the defensive side. Mostly 2 and 3 stars. Landed some notable local talent.

Don't know if true, but read that the kid got a big NIL deal to attend Jackson St.

Side note: He is from the same high school as Taylor Heinicke.

This is why anyone who is in favor of paying the players is a complete and utter moron. I've been against it from day one because of this exact situation. It's going to get a LOT worse before they put a stop to it.

The case here is interesting. This kid likely has no intention of staying there for his entire college career. He's probably thinking that he can start immediately, get a lot of playing time, and then transfer later. And put some cash in his pocket right away. So the question is, would he go there if he couldn't transfer without sitting out a year? A year is a long time for a 20-ish year old. This case is like a chicken and egg thing as to what is more of a problem, NIL or the new transfer rule.

Cry me a river. Full ride to a school that the athlete would never get into... if you ever have a kid that works his ass off at school and gets turned down by a school that I'd have to write $50,000 checks to every year... you'd get it.

But the real point of this is that it's an endless stream of money. Schools with big donors will pay and pay.

And FTR, when I was in college, the athletes got fed pretty damn well while I ate $1 McDonald's cheeseburgers. :coffee:

The question is how can someone stop or limit it? Courts and legislatures have said they have a right to the money so NCAA was forced to allow it. They could have preemptively limited it but now that it is there, it's going to be tough to take away

Social media is extremely entertaining about Travis Hunter. Lots of folks trying to put race into this when it has nothing to do with race. If this was a white kid who decided at the last minute to go to St Francis instead of Ohio State, my reaction would be the same.

JSU is not a top 300 university. Not a top 100 in Division I football. This kid was holding the golden ticket to just about any school in the country.

SWAC has 10 players in the NFL:

Alabama A&M - 1
Alabama State - 1
Alcorn - 1
APB - 1
Bethune - 0
FAMU - 0
Grambling - 2
JSU - 0
MVSU - 1
PVAM - 2
Southern - 1
Texas Southern - 0

Some random lower I-A teams...

Louisiana Tech - 12
Memphis - 12
Illinois - 11
Northern Illinois - 9
Central Michigan - 8
Florida Atlantic - 8
Rice - 7

Hell, South Carolina State and NCA&T have almost as many players as all the SWAC.

Tennessee just swiped Navy Shuler, son of Vols great Heath Shuler (so-so NFL career) from App State....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Dal, do you know why college coaches get paid so much? Because it's legal to pay them. Highest bidder gets the most sought after coach. If you pay players, why wouldn't it be the same?
