SuperHornet wrote: Mon Dec 20, 2021 1:11 pm Thank you, 89. I tuned into the LA Bowl late, and couldn't find video of that first pass for Cooper Legas. Impressive, to say the least. So was the Coastal win (so long as one doesn't care about defense). But some of the other early bowls leave a lot to be desired. Could we replace 6-7 Hawai'i with oh, say, SFA? Or, maybe revise a rule and allow a team like JMU to sneak in there after losing in the playoffs? Wouldn't that provide a better matchup than an FBS team with a losing record?
Generally not.

I heard some speculation about some FCS teams jumping into the fray. Rutgers? They're 5-7, 2-7 Big Ten. I think I'd rather see SDSU or Montana against Wake Forest. Heck, some were speculating over at SacBuzz about Sac State jumping in, but the consensus was that SDSU and Montana had the best shot of having guys still together to prep for Wake....

As of 23 DEC, I'm seeing Internet speculation revolving around Rutgers (5-7, 2-7 Big Ten), and dabbling into FCS Land with SDSU (11-4, 5-3 MVFC, FCS Semifinalist) and Montana (10-3, 6-2 Big Sky, FCS #6 seed and Round of 16), and fan interest from Sac State 9-3, 8-0 Big Sky, FCS #4 seed and Round of 16). They've established a deadline of noon Friday. The opponent of record is still Wake Forest (10-3, 7-1 ACC).

Apparently, this is the first Florida loss to C. Florida EVER, and some Florida players were NOT happy about it. I guess they thought they'd win in a walkover, or that UCF would just quit. There were post-game fights, it seems.

EDIT: This is ALSO Florida's first in-state loss to a school not named Miami or Florida State since a 1938 loss to Stetson. STETSON?!? Wow....

Use to be bowl teams only had to deal with missing injured players. Then years ago the trend of top pro prospects sitting out bowl games became more prevalent. Now you have additional players not playing because they have entered the transfer portal. Even without Covid you now have teams missing a lot of players, kind of turning the 40+ bowl games into a joke.
All the more reason to get the playoffs expanded…

FWIW JMU, SHSU, amd JSU aren’t bowl eligible until 2024. But if they could aomehow schedule 5 home FBS games next season, would be bowl eligible 2023. JMU is trying to speed that up and become bowl eligible by 2023.

From the JMU board (no link):
2. Schedule and play at least 60 percent of its football contests against members of Football Bowl Subdivision. Institutions shall schedule and play at least five regular season home contests against FBS opponents. [Bylaw 20.9.7.2]
NCAA 2016, "Bylaw 20.9.9.2 Football Scheduling Requirement (FBS)", p. 344.

“An FBS team must schedule a total of five home games per year; for the purposes of scheduling, a "home game" must take place at a venue in which the team plays 50% of its "home games", although a team is allowed to count one neutral-site game against an FBS team toward the "home game" requirement.”

Just saw on the JMU board, while not officially announced yet, its a done deal: JMU will be playing a full SBC conference schedule next season: App/Coastal/Georgia State/Georgia Southern/Marshall/ODU + 2 West division opponents. 4 home/4 away.
OOC is Weber St, Norfolk St, @ Louisville, and an unknown. Must be a 5th home FBS because apparently will be bowl eligible 1 season earlier, 2023..
