Final CFP 05 DEC 21

Post by SuperHornet »

According to the newest Playoff/Bowl Projector, in NYE games, Georgia will face OK State in the Orange Bowl, and Michigan will have to defend against Cincinnati (G5) in the Cotton Bowl. Should this come to fruition, this would be ground-shaking. Naturally, Georgia and Michigan are favored to win and meet for the National Championship 10 JAN 22.

Notable bowl matchups include:

Ole Miss vs. Notre Dame in the Peach Bowl (30 DEC)
Ohio State vs. Utah in the Rose Bowl (01 JAN)
Baylor vs. Alabama in the Sugar Bowl (01 JAN)
Michigan State vs. Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl
WI vs. KY in the Outback Bowl (01 JAN)
IA vs AR in the Citrus Bowl (01 JAN)
NC State vs. TX A&M in the Gator Bowl (31 DEC)
North Carolina vs. Oregon State in the Sun Bowl (31 DEC)
K-State vs. LSU in the Liberty Bowl (28 DEC)
Wake Forest vs. AZ State in the Holiday Bowl (28 DEC)
VA vs. East Carolina in the Military Bowl (27 DEC)
Army vs. North Texas in the Armed Forces Bowl (22 DEC)
Marshall vs. Liberty in the Boca Raton Bowl (18 DEC)
UTSA vs. Coastal Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Bowl (20 DEC)
Old Dominion vs. Miami (OH) in the Cure Bowl (17 DEC)

The article notes that some conferences may not meet their bowl commitments. Projected replacement teams are noted by an asterisk.

The following teams have already accepted bids:

East Carolina to the Military Bowl (27 DEC)
Memphis State to the Hawai'i Bowl (24 DEC)
Middle TN State and Toledo to the Bahamas Bowl (17 DEC)

What is notable about any of those?

I'm not sure I remember a year with so much uncertainty around the bowls. I've seen teams projected to go to four or five different bowls this week.

For me, they're notable either for their history (the Sun Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, and the Holiday Bowl), for the intended presence of a service academy (Navy isn't eligible this year), or for the presence of a recent FCS school (Liberty, Coastal, and ODU).

That's all....

Final CFP 05 DEC 21

Post by SuperHornet »

The CFP has been announced. I'm shocked that they didn't find an excuse to screw Cincinnati. I still think they got the order wrong, though. Michigan is better than Alabama, IMO.

1. Alabama
2. Michigan
3. Georgia
4. Cincinnati

Notre Dame is first out at #5. Ohio State moved up to #6.

The complete CFP Poll:

Through Games DEC. 5, 2021
1 Alabama 12-1 3
2 Michigan 12-1 2
3 Georgia 12-1 1
4 Cincinnati 13-0 4
5 Notre Dame 11-1 6
6 Ohio State 10-2 7
7 Baylor 11-2 9
8 Ole Miss 10-2 8
9 Oklahoma State 11-2 5
10 Michigan State 10-2 11
11 Utah 10-3 17
12 Pittsburgh 11-2 15
13 BYU 10-2 12
14 Oregon 10-3 10
15 Iowa 10-3 13
16 Oklahoma 10-2 14
17 Wake Forest 10-3 16
18 NC State 9-3 18
19 Clemson 9-3 20
20 Houston 11-2 21
21 Arkansas 8-4 22
22 Kentucky 9-3 23
23 Louisiana 12-1 24
24 San Diego State 11-2 19
25 Texas A&M 8-4 25

They did not want UGA/Bama in the semis, so they finagled it a bit.

That's an easy fix.

1. Michigan
2. Alabama
3. Cincinnati
4. Georgia

And the rationale would be as simple as Michigan, Alabama, and Cincinnati won their CGs, while Georgia didn't.

True, but the winner in Frisco will STILL be the true NCAA D-I National Champion in MY book.

That said, one can only hope that this will provide impetus to the idea of giving auto-bids to EVERY FBS conference and eliminating some of these dumb bowls. There's still a need for the NY6 and a couple more, but the Carquest Bowls of the world have got to go....
