Liberty Extends Contract of Legendary Coach

Post by SuperHornet »

Liberty University has extended the contract of legendary softball coach Dr. Dot Richardson through 2027. A just reward for a 44-15, 16-2 ASUN North record, the best in school history. This resulted in an ASUN Tournament championship and a spot in the Knoxville Regional final, where the Flames unfortunately fell to JMU. Liberty was also ranked for the first time ever, finishing the year at #25. Dr. Richardson was named 2021 ASUN Coach of the Year, her third such award with Liberty after winning in the Big South in '17 and '18. The Flames have won 40+ games four years in a row and have made the post-season in each of those years. Three of Dr. Richardson's eight wins over ranked programs came this past season. Prior to coming to Liberty, Dr. Richardson is best known for her time playing for Team USA, having won the first NCAA Championship with UCLA in 1982 and two gold medals in 1996 and 2000 (her walk-off shot in '96 won the gold). Dr. Richardson was a shortstop. Away from softball, Dr. Richardson is an orthopedic surgeon. She is a member of the Softball Hall of Fame and chair of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Softball Ministry.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
