Thank Right-Wing Nuts for Socialism's Fading Stigma...
It was recently announced to me by a friend that Socialism is now more trendy and exciting than ever...
I responded: "Gosh really... why so..?"
Apparently Enron as a role model for business, Wall Street greed, giant payouts to failing corporate leaders and Hedge Fund managers skimming millions off the top have inspired the 20 & 30 something generation to distrust free market capitalism more than socialism...
That combined with Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck foaming at the mouth every afternoon like broken records...
This just in:
The Soviet Union is gone - the young no longer see socialism as anti-Americanism
Free market capitalism and talk radio are doing what Eugene Debs, Edward Bellamy, Albert Einstein, Susan B. Antony, Helen Keller, George Bernard Shaw and their comrades never could = Promote Socialism
Talk Radio In tandem with Wall Street greed and rampant corporate thievery are building socialism in America...
Sometimes we can only blame ourselves

No, what's building socialism in America is the realization amongst Americans that they can do NOTHING and live off the government teet, because their benevolent government will take from those who HAVE (at alarmingly increasing levels), and those who WORK, to give to those who choose NOT to work. It's a slippery slope we've started down, and not one I'm sure we can recover from.

try to pay attention AZGF...
20 & 30 somethings living off the government teet..? explain how please..?
The point I'm making is simple... please re-read my post
BTW: I'm 45 and of all the money I'm ever going to make (from birth to death) I've made 85% of it already... so my opinion isn't really that important - nor do I really care if America becomes whatever it becomes...
Each generation is to decide what America is... and if corporate greed and nut-balls are a factor in America's shift to another form - that is how it is... it's really just that simple (maybe)

No, we won't recover short of a bloody revolution. Because the two parties in power are both providing a teet to a different constituency and believe their teet is justified, rational & consistent with their intepretation of the constitution...like two wolves and a sheep trying to decide what's for dinner (we the sheeple).....

Hell, 20 and 30 somethings are still living off their PARENT'S teets....they haven't even moved ON to the Government, yet.
And the only reason you've made 85% of the money you're going to make is becuase you just went from (or are moving from) a GREAT job to a much lower paying job for "lifestyle" reasons. I'm 47, and I'll make more in the next 5 years than I did in the previous 20. And you're right...each generation is to decide what America is...and the 20 & 30 somethings are deciding that it's going to bea welfare state. Stick THAT in your pipe and smoke it.

I say a grassroots movement needs to be started in which we demand term limits for our reps! That gains some steam and I bet they start listening. Either way, we get them out before they can do damage.
Also, as long as this current administration is looking into limiting executive pay, why don't we start investigation how much a former elected official would be allowed to make? Is it right that Al Gore has made over $100 million after he was VP, when they are talking about limiting executive pay?
I think this would start to rebuild some of the confidence in our country that is lacking.

eh...term limits....we have elections every two years....shouldn't punish a good legislator (if they exist) just because citizens are too fokking stupid to remove a bad one (ie; Virginnia Foxx, Byrd, Murtha...ah hell, I could go all day on this one)....we get the government we deserve (and allow)...

Then how about mandatory voting. Too many people bitch and don't vote.

AZGF,
Try to make peace with the reality at hand... (breath in and exhale slowly)
It sounds like you picked a bad time to dramatically up your income...
The 90's (Clinton era) was really the time to cash in dude.. you missed it by a decade
again:
Try to make peace with the situation, the world is changing and the next few generations of Americans are not happy with the choices we made and will likely chose differently
peace my friend - let it go -

our time is over here... let the kids take it from here

No..no...no...no...you really want the same people who vote on American Idol enriching Lady Gaga to choose who leads our foreign & economic policy? How about people who own property, or pay income taxes, or can pass a civics test....I don't know, but more people voting does not necessarily mean better government....

Um...
This thread is about "the shifting of the American mind" in the younger 1/3 of the population...
They feel as though Free Market Capitalism has failed them - and the loudest voices in support of free market capitalism are foaming at the mouth billionaire Radio hosts...
thus supporting the distrust in capitalism...
(stay on task boys)

That is why I like low turnout (the informed) and wide margins (political capital/mandate).
Plus it makes my job easier.

...amd since the younger 1/3 of the population has historically low voter turnout, it's applicable to the conversation. If you claim they're shifting the American mind, you might want to remember that....say next year's election...more than likely, this past year's young voters will remember how much fun keggers are or maybe the new season of Big Brother starts on same day....either way, I wouldn't wager the mortgage on the young voters deciding the next election....

no baby boomer ever gets to do the "kids these days" routine... it's the height of hypocrisy... you wanna understand the way things are now??? blame the boomers.
the "me" generation... the one that started out living in heretofore unknown material comfort, ran off to college in huge numbers - found political activism when it was "in" became indifferent right about the time it stopped being "hip" - brought us the "buy now, pay later" philosophy of EVERYTHING... entered their prime earning years and demanded their taxes be lowered while their services increased... (blame the politicians all you like - but they just reflect the voters) their two presidents have been Clinton and Bush... hardly a noteworthy pair...
and now as they wind down their earning years - they've already begun patting themselves on the back for the clusterfuck they've left the millenials to clean up.
try as you might - but this isn't at the feet of "kids these days" we're just living in "boomerland"

From those of us who have actually contributed to society over and above pulling our own weight to those of you who have not, fvck you very much from the bottom of my heart.
And no, Cleets, I will not go silently. Furthermore, since you have apparently carried your own weight, my diatribe is NOT directed at you. It is directed at the consciences (oxymoron, I know) of those low-lifes who have never carried their own weight and expect someone else to carry it for them.

Sorry mi amigo, wasn't trying to hijack your thread, just thought it was pertinent to the conversation to address the distrust issue of our elected officials and how to remedy that. It's one thing to not like the direction your country is headed, but another to have representatives that seem to forward that rotten agenda and then thumb their noses at you, all the while lining their pockets with special interest monies.

I am not happy with the boomers either, and your criticisms of the boomere gereation ring true, but we are not all the same and you jump to a series of unjustifiable conclusions.
The assumption that all boomers are the same and the association of everything "boomer" with "capitalism and free enterprise," and everything non-boomer with socialism, belies a breathtaking ignorance and shallowness.

It is interesting to consider...
When I was in my 20's & 30's I was Pro-Capitalism - like everybody my age - we distrusted socialism as a concept and wanted the government to "stay out of our life"
I had hippie sensibilities regarding social conscience and global issues...
But distrusted the Federal Government in almost every way
Today the 20/30 somethings distrust capitalism as a concept
They see it as a small club of thieves stealing from the workers
and the Capitalist support group (Rush Hannity Beck Orielly) all way too rich way too corrupt and way to obviously connected to the old boys club...
how the worm turns...

YOUR BROTHER brought up my supposed "welfare", so HE made it about me, not ME. And, FYI, credit unions never got a dime of bailout money. Go fuck yourself.
