Let them eat cake. It sure looks like 99% of stealing isn't to put food on the table.

I agree. Let's start with Rick Scott.

What about the elected officials, supposed public servants, who leverage their positions to make millions? Obama, Bernie, etc.

Maybe Republicans are just more honest about their greed?

Depends on how they leverage it.

If someone makes money writing books, giving speeches, that is fine. If they inside trade, not fine.

Baloney. If the wealthy should pay more in taxes then elected officials should pay a 100% tax rate on income they receive as a result of the notoriety their elected positions have given them. They're there to serve the people not line their pockets. Otherwise they're just as greedy and corrupt as they allege capitalists are.

But theft is still wrong, correct? Whether it’s someone starving in America or stealing from public coffers?

I think kalm is asking this in good faith, but I also think it should be pointed out the real reason a lot of latte liberals have any interest in this is that so many shoplifting arrests are black people. If there was racial parity they wouldn't care. It's fine to talk about why people shoplift, but don't muddy the waters with garbage about systemic racism of the justice system.

Maybe it's time to change course then, and arrest white people and ignore theft by black people.

It’s the old Jean Valjean story but it mostly isn’t the case. There are shelters and food banks everywhere. Nobody in the US is dying of starvation. The person who responded to Rose was off base because it validated the original premise that there are Americans who must steal to avoid starvation. That’s bullshit.

I was going to make a Les Mis reference but figured only Gannonfan would get it.

I guess that makes you Javier....

There are countless food banks, private services, church groups, government-funded centers to provide meals, shelter, clothing, job training. I get that pride and shame keep a lot of people from going to those places - there is plenty of food for those that want it bad enough. Food Banks, for instance, aren't a solution though. Crisis Ministries exists as well to give meals, clothes and toys at Christmas.

Again - those services aren't a solution, although they are treated as such. There's help and food out there for anyone that wants it. You literally just show up. No questions asked. Unfortunately, it all gets abused. I've seen people pull up in Tahoe's with $5k in rims and paint jobs to get free food, clothes, toys, etc... :ohno:

You can't escape it - there will always be those shitty people taking advantage of a situation. Before Thanksgiving my family and I helped box 44 Thanksgiving dinners for seniors in a poor area of town called Paradise (we went through a foundation with the area). You'd think we would know that all 44 seniors getting the meals would really need it. We dropped off meals at homes that clearly needed the help (and were super appreciative). We dropped off meals at homes that were clearly taking advantage of the system. New construction with nice cars, big ass TVs and PlayStation. It's sad - those people literally took food away from more deserving people. :ohno:

But we learned - so now that we're going at it again for Christmas guess which addresses aren't on the list. Those greedy choads.

RAWR!!!!!!!!!

You can't engage with those kind of people b/c there is no possibility of civil discourse (unlike here where even I and BDK can agree on things). Their myopic view is the only one that matters. They have all the answers and for the life of them can't understand why nobody else knows what they know.

Woman posted a nice story about her paying for a cop's lunch at a local place and the restaurant gave her half price on her and the cops, so basically free. You should have seen some of the woke libs heads explode.

Why do people get upset over someone showing appreciation?

Why can't we appreciate the gesture even if we disagree with someone's politics?

The lack of respect and civil discourse in this country is a bigger problem than anything that the alt-right and ctrl-left think is wrong.

It was to whom the appreciation was shown that was the problem. And a lot of folks started by saying "Not to be cynical...." I pointed out that there is a name for folks who say that.
