Homeland Security chief says U.S. will not give refuge to those fleeing Cuba and Haiti by boat

Not one single peep about this from the Donks...no AOC...nothing but crickets. Why? :?

Because Cubans are an easy vote for R's, the recent vids of the Commie crackdown on that island explain why.
This is actually very interesting. My friend Sybil is 100% Cuban. Her parents were conceived in Cuba / Born in Miami after the Bay of Pigs. She's got family in Florida, NC and NYC. The Florida family and friends voted Republican for the first time in 2020. ALl others continued to vote Democrat. This is an anecdotal but from her interactions with family the change had to do more with the Democratic Party being too associated with Socialism/Communism (warranted or not) and that scared the living shit out Cubans that either lived under Castro or had grown up hearing the stories from parents/grandparents.

So, anecdotally, it seems it was more fear-mongering than policy that made the difference for this group.

So Lincoln was for gay marriage, open borders. Gays in the military. Trannys in the military. Who knew?

Lincoln in 1858:

https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/153860
Sounds like a liberal today.
They were for social justice - yes. It's ok to be ignorant on a topic. And it's cute that you think one quote represents an entire party. :dunce:

We've had this discussion - the platforms for the Rs and Ds basically switched in the early 20th century (truly, an ideological shift in the 1910s).

The first Republicans were for big government intervention. The party supported classical liberalism, tariffs, environmental protection and conservation, pro-labor unions (until the 1920s). They wildly expanded federal power in the late 1800s. After the Civil War, Republicans advanced legislation for social justice reforms, laws to protect blacks - all of which were opposed by Democrats who hated government interference. Does that sound familiar? They've pretty much always been anti-Immigration.

The modern Evangelical GOP didn't arise until our lifetimes (when so many of the Southern Democrats became Republicans).

Go read about William Jennings Bryant - it's all his fault.
Its cute and :dunce: that you think Lincoln views in mid 1800s would make him a liberal today..

You can have your head stuck in the sand all you want but facts are facts (and not alternative). The Republican Party of Lincoln is more ideologically aligned with the Democrats of today. It's no skin off my back if you want to remain ignorant.

* ignorantly

MAGAts would consider Reagan a RINO loser.

If we should consider when people lived (i.e. Founding Fathers owning slaves) then shouldn't we look at Lincoln based on his times? His views were definitely more liberal and donk-like while the confederates were the conks of their time.

Why isn't DeSantis out there arresting the protestors in Florida?

In a show of solidarity with Cuban people protesting against the country’s communist dictatorship, South Florida demonstrators shut down a major expressway Tuesday afternoon in Miami-Dade County.

The Palmetto Expressway/State Road 826 was closed for hours, starting at about 1 p.m. Video from television station helicopters showed the highway closed in both directions, and there was an extensive police presence.
...

The blocking of Florida’s major roads by protesters sparked discussion about the state’s new anti-protest law — championed and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in response to 2020 social justice demonstrations the MAGA movement didn’t like. The law makes illegal some of what anti-Cuban government protesters are now doing.

When he signed the legislation into law in April, DeSantis said: “Just think about it, you’re driving home from work, and all of a sudden, you have people out there shutting down a highway, and we worked hard to make sure that didn’t happen in Florida. … They start to do that, [then] there needs to be swift penalties.”

Yeah, had nothing to do with them fleeing from other issues. They were living fine lives abroad, saw the ad for "free land in America" and dropped everything and left. Sounds legit.

Sad the state of American History around here, and the level of cognitive dissonance

You mean like the current immigrants aren't fleeing from other issues? That they are leading fine lives abroad?

So coyotes are like modern-day passenger liners? :)

There are parallels to the past that should be considered. We should also consider that the country is mostly settled, there is less land available and there should be a limit to how much "free" sh!t we can give away. Free citizenship and free healthcare are probably too much, pick one.

Of course things are somewhat different - but instead of farmers, we need farm workers, and a whole host of other jobs.

Healthcare should be paid for everyone, like an other civilized nation, and we should give a path to citizenship. Expanding legal immigration would lessen the temptations to come illegally (they are going to come as long as there are better opportunities), as well as trying to lessen the reasons why people flee their home countries.

If you think Lincoln was a conk then you should take a look at Jeff Davis' positions.

Lincoln was liberal for his time and if you brought him in to today's world and gave him time to review the history between the 1860's and now he would be ashamed of the Republican Party.
