While we only have 2 major parties, it seems like we really have 3 major political movements: the centrist establishment, the populist right, and the progressive left.

If the populist right can find a leader (or leaders) who are rational and charismatic they will pull union/blue-collar worker and Hispanic support away from the Dems.

Clinton and Obama were talking about the OTHER HALF OF AMERICA. Not just the extremists. Let’s not have revisionist history here. 600 million guns in this country...that’s a SHITLOAD of people clinging to guns. 300 million plus of various religions....also a shitload “clinging” to religion. And the fact they didn’t use the word populist doesn’t make it not appropriate here. The people who Trump represented absolutely were populist. Average people. Farmers. Union workers. Minorities. The working class. He ALSO happened to attract some fringe extremist groups, yes. But the vast majority are salt-of-the-earth people. You only need to drive through Rural Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, etc., to understand that.
