Here We Go Again (Philadelphia)

Post by BDKJMU »

At least 30 police officers inhured, at least 30 arrests, mass looting & rioting..
Walter Wallace, who was allegedly holding a knife, was fatally shot while two police officers were responding to a complaint about a man with a weapon in Cobbs Creek, according to the Associated Press. He "advanced toward" the officers, who then fired "several times," the outlet reported.

Wallace was hit in both the shoulder and chest, then taken in a police vehicle to a hospital, where he died.

Following Wallace's death, which was recorded and posted on social media, hundreds of people -- some armed with bricks -- protested in the 52nd Street commercial district, and the demonstration quickly turned violent. Police cars and dumpsters were set ablaze and NBC10 Philadelphia reported that at least 30 police officers were hurt.

A 56-year-old sergeant was struck by a truck and was hospitalized with a broken leg, among other injuries.

Stores including several Rite Aid pharmacies, a restaurant, and clothing and shoe shops were broken into. Two ATMs were also reported to have been smashed.

More than 30 people were arrested during the confrontation, according to police....

Just in time for Trump to pick up more votes in PA.

BTW Trump never had a PA poll in his favor before yesterday. The last 2: Yesterday Trump +2, today, tied.

He's up by 2 in one poll, with a MoE of 4.9%. I wouldn't get a warm fuzzy about that one just yet.

Riots nationwide are now underway. Philly, NYC, DC, Minny, and of course Seattle and Portland.

Edit: Dodgers won the WS so LA will likely see riots too.

Makes me wonder if "The Talk" should include things like "Don't rush the police with a knife" or "Don't flee the scene of a crime" or "Don't beat your wife/girlfriend" as well as "Show your hands" and "Don't wear hoodies".
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"

By all indications this was a mentally disturbed individual who was having an episode. This should be a case study for how not to deal with such individuals as well as a jumping off point for how we do want to handle these in the future. Philly cops don't normally carry tasers and I'm not sure there's body-cam footage (although in this case that's likely not to be an issue since this was right out in the street and multiple people were filming). I don't have the answers, but firing off 14 rounds seems to not be the answer either. Tough spot for the cops to be in - I don't know how we should deal with folks like the deceased here.

So maybe only use 5 or 6 shots instead?

Sounds exactly like the Lancaster case. Police called three times that day to the location.

Not really sure what the best way to deal with this is, but if you're going to play the card he was mentally ill and wasn't responsible for his actions then talking about deescalation is pointless, and sending a social worker will probably just get that social worker stabbed.
