You'd think for that kind of money we wouldn't have to let no chinamen push us around like that :ohno:

My grandpa was terrified of them, said if we let them in they'd own the country in short order. Liked Mexicans, hated Chinese. Used to wag his finger at me and wax poetic...he'd say: chinky chinky chinaman sittin on a fence, tryin to make a dollar out of fifteen cents.

Well its true

We exploited a broken economic system. Argue it wasn’t the the case, fine. But the USSR did in fact run out of cash trying to keep up

Given that our foreign policy on China since Nixon has been to bolster them economically by allowing them into world markets AND given that we have only taken the PLA seriously for just the last 10 years.... I’d say that isn’t the strategy behind the spending

But yeah... we went to Afghanistan for the minerals and we’re spending on the military to bankrupt our creditors

The Russians were just playing Soviet.

CID is right. We merely outspent them. The Russian were able to get a little bits of freedom after Gorbechev's rise to power and from there on it was a only a matter of time. The policies of "demokratizatsiya " and "Glasnost" did so much from a liberalism perspective that coupled with the shitty economy (and rising alcohol costs! :) ) collapse was shortly ahead.

China effectively putting an end to “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong

Did anybody really believe them in the 1990s anyway?

This actually isn’t that alarming since it has been expected since the 1990s. I am only surprised it didn’t happen 10 years ago.

Even best case it was going to happen in 2047 anyway. I agree, I'm shocked it took this long for China to scrap the '97 agreement.

An Op-Ed from the editor of the Thai Enquirer

https://www.thaienquirer.com/13657/opin ... o-beijing/

This paper tends to slant anti-West but it is very pro-Democracy and is generally consistent on government belligerence

I have seen this kind of opinion around Asia over the last couple years and thought I’d post it for some perspective from overseas

This guy has a way with words. Trump’s “braggadocious” personality. Appeasement of the PRC “calcified under Obama.”

Spot-on in substance.

There are some pretty sharp tacks over here in print media. Asia in general (minus China of course) has a pretty fair, robust media

Nikkei Asian Review is probably by far one if the most excellent outlets in the world.
