We exploited a broken economic system. Argue it wasn’t the the case, fine. But the USSR did in fact run out of cash trying to keep up
Given that our foreign policy on China since Nixon has been to bolster them economically by allowing them into world markets AND given that we have only taken the PLA seriously for just the last 10 years.... I’d say that isn’t the strategy behind the spending
But yeah... we went to Afghanistan for the minerals and we’re spending on the military to bankrupt our creditors

..somebody has to provide the close air support.
And your comment about Afghanistan's location suggests you didn't realize the two countries share a border.

Near East Asia is the State Department’s designation for the region which includes Afghanistan. It has nothing to do with who shares borders.

Re: China
I think it has more to do with India and Pakistan having nuclear deterrence
China is going to try to co-opt Pakistan and I say go for it! (have the popcorn ready)
Pakistan will bleed China in time - as they did Britain

Re: China
My understanding is that they're fighting with fists and rocks and that de-escalation is being handled at the local commander level. It's entertaining but doesn't seem serious at this point.
Pakistan is like Afghanistan, there are so many factions, intrigues, and feuds that will bog another country down. I do hope China gets embroiled there. I'm not sure their 800 lb financial gorilla approach and lack of concern with collateral damage will be as effective.
Are there reasons behind State calling that area Near East Asia?

Re: China
How Xi Jinping is Ruining China's Dream of a Century of Dominance
The problem with Xi and his entourage is that they perceive China’s history and future trajectory from a Han-nationalist point of view. In that frame of thought, China rise since the economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping are not merely a triumph of reform and governance which has served the Chinese people well, but they are a revanche. Success is “payback” for the two centuries of “humiliation” that China, the rightful leader of the world, and the Han people have suffered at the hands of the West.
...
It is too early to say whether all this is enough to entirely derail the rise of China to global prominence this century, but it is fair to say that the rest of the world is certainly not looking forward to it any more, greatly slowing the impetus of such a development. And all this because of the misjudgement and mismanagement of Xi. For this reason, it is much more likely that history will remember Xi not as the man who restored China to greatness, as he so desperately seems to desire, but as a sort of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who instead of waiting patiently for the inevitable triumph of his own country, he felt compelled to aggressively push that triumph down everybody else’s throat, and in the process brought ruin to his country.
