Nearly two dozen Chinese military aircraft and ships were detected around Taiwan on Monday morning after the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps held joint exercises in the South China Sea over the weekend.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry said that 18 People's Liberation Army aircraft were detected, 11 of which crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial buffer zone in between the island and China. Four vessels were also detected around Taiwan..

On an issue where we should be out in front of and amazingly clear, we are anything other than that. Maybe it is a lot more complex, maybe we're worried that we've been doing a lot of crap over other airspaces that we shouldn't be doing, maybe we're concerned that there is a real threat to our air space, both military as well as civilian, so we don't want to admit the vulnerability, or maybe these are alien craft and we haven't figured out which sci-fi movie plot we want to follow yet? But we've had 4 instances of using military force over our own country for more than a week now and the most we have to show for it yet is a still photo of some navy guys hauling in a lot of white balloon material into a boat. Is the military even telling the White House what's going on? Who's in charge here? Just when you thought we didn't need another Alexander Haig.

I think those sidewinder missiles are about $500k a pop, and apparently we missed on the first shot on one of the small "things" and had to shoot a second missile to take it down. You figure we haven't used military force in our own airspace for something like, I don't know, since WWII, and now we break that string of 80 years of no military force in our airspace and in the span of two weeks we shoot off 5 missiles. I really just want to know what we're shooting at - I don't think that's a big ask.

That 2nd aircraft seems to be a tough out.

Weather is keeping them retrieving the one off the coast of Alaska, when they do get it it will probably be my old unit thats closest, 222nd Aviation Bn at Ft. Wainwright.

When I was stationed there in the 70s there were a lot of balloons released by NOAA as well as rockets they'd shoot to enhance the Aurora. Back before satellites in the early days of the Cold War there were radar stations all across northern Alaska and Canada to spot Russian ICBMs coming over the pole, the Distant Early Warning Line. When satellites replaced them many were repurposed for civilian scientific research.

For the lower altitude ones not sure why we couldn’t use A10s or C130 gun ships. Putting up a pair of A10s or a single C130 gunship + a burst of 20 MM from a Gatling I would imagine would be a lot cheaper than putting up a pair of F22s or F16s + a $439k sidewinder (Edit: and in the one case 2 sidewinders)..
