That article is well thought out but it is a big bag of wishful thinking. A lot of people are trying to draw parallels with China and Japan and God help us if those people ever wind up in policy positions (many are now).

We beat the nationalism out of Japan with a baseball bat in the 1940s. They have been the opposite of nationalistic since 1945 and have only become a little assertive starting in about 2005.

China is today what Japan would have been in 1965 if we had signed an armistice with them after taking back all the little shithole islands up to but not including the Philippines.

China is literally equal to us militarily today on most metrics, except tech and volume and they are out superiors in some VERY scary categories. All of the theories that talk about demographic decline, dissent, etc are wishful thinking thought exercises. This is the Chinese century and we just do not realize it yet. They will be dictating fiscal policy to our own Congress within 30 years and that is a fact. None of the bars to Chinese global hegemony will matter at that point.

It would be interesting to see how a re-armed Japan would affect the equation - seems like WW2 would have left them with more worries than anyone about there being a new boss in the hood.
They won’t matter no matter what they do. The time to start worrying about the CCP was 20 years ago. We are well past the point where anything we do will make a difference.

Our current domestic culture will ensure that we will become Chinese vassals long before we would ever muster the will to resist.

They're not wrong about needing China's cooperation on climate change but they're naive if they think that China is going to do more than throw us an environmental bone or two no matter how much we bend over and appease them.

Interesting that they want to give China a pass on the genocide of Uyghurs, suppressing Hong Kong protesters, etc. while demonizing Israel for what could be argued is a disproportionate response to Hamas' rocket attacks and denial of their right to exist.
Maybe naive, maybe they recognize that China is going to do what they want to do and there isn't a thing the rest of the world can do about that.
They're socialists, they believe in an economic system that has never worked on a large scale. They couldn't tell the difference between a bull and a heifer with a cheatsheet, no way they recognize what China is really up to.

I absolutely agree. Open source from China watchers leans towards the next 6 years as being very dangerous for Taiwan. Xi has made it a national priority

Let's be honest, no one was ever going to volunteer to die for HK or Taiwan. Outside of economic sanctions, what were the US and Europe really going to do to stop China from rolling those 2 places?

And when it goes hot, how long do you think Taiwan can hold out? Days? Weeks?

True.
But replace HK and Taiwan, and China, with Sudentland, Austria, and Germay. Any similarities? (Not that I think the US should have done anything in 1938-1939, either)..

Too bad we can't do shit about the Chinese ascendancy except try to blame it on Ilhan Omar. All that money poured into being the world's premiere military power and we can't do shit except watch the Chinese eat our lunch.

Apparently there may be thousands dead in a 2.5 mile tunnel in Zhengzhou which flooded in a few minutes during rush hour.

Information in English seems scarce, and China is probably trying to stop uncontrolled info to the outside world, so I don't have any links right now besides what's being said on Reddit and other forums.

China criticises NBC Olympics broadcast for 'incomplete map'
China criticised NBC Universal for showing an "incomplete map" of the country in its broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, after a map displayed during the arrival of Chinese athletes included neither Taiwan nor the South China Sea.

Not a bad guess. Xi wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize his Golden pangolin, assuming the US doesn’t boycott those games — a distinct possibility.

DoD has assessed that the next six years are going to be very dangerous in the Strait of Taiwan. There are several political and cultural issues that put Xi on a timeline for “reunification” during that period, or there will be a personal loss of face for him.

I’m not necessarily a disciple of specific timelines like that, but China is in fact getting exponentially more aggressive there as well as in the South China Sea.

Is it fair to say that it isn't just about Taiwan being a renegade province that needs to be brought back into the fold? They need Taiwan to put the bow on their Spratly Island and similar bases so they can claim the South China Sea as their personal swimming pool and control passage through it.

It would bolster their claim (a little) but Taiwan being a part of China in the eyes of the CCP is a much older issue.

Vietnam’s and the Philippines’ claims would not be diminished by an integrated Taiwan.

I have a FB friend who is black and posted that speedometer scale of how long slavery existed in America over its historical life

The graphic was not entirely inaccurate (it has “America” existing from about 1620) but anyways, I digress

A commenter claimed that he had lived in China for 6 years, doing bidness, had traveled all over China, had never seen a slave, and therefore there was no slavery in China (it was a very klammy exchange)

Anyway, I posted several State Dept and open source links, and he proceeded to obfuscate about how the 13th Amendment allows for prison labor and how this is the same thing.

I went back anf forth with him a couple times and then informed him that I dont argue with flat earthers, MAGAtards, QAnon queers, Maoists, Leninists, Stalinists, Pizza ParlorPedos, or any other nuts.
