As somebody who has done SCBA testing for a number of years (I was the lead Workplace Safety Committee member for our entire facility at my previous job) along with QNFT/QLFT (quantitative fit test/qualitative fit test) of other types of masks, seeing all these homemade masks and how people wearing them makes me chuckle. The amount of blowby/leakage on them basically makes it like you are not even wearing a mask at all. A good fit is one where it is not comfortable to be wearing it.

A N95 mask is the only one (outside of a full sealed can type respirator) that does anything, and that is only if it is fitted properly. The rest are barely effective at best and at worst just a placebo.
Yup, similar experiences here - the main reason why we didn't have masks in place before was basically due to the science of it - wearing masks like we're wearing them have no measurable benefit. The science is pretty clear on that. Like you said, there are gaps all over the place on these masks, people aren't trained in using masks so you see people continually touch them and adjust them with their hands and then touch other things without disinfecting, and these masks aren't going to stop the small particles of moisture that come from breathing, coughing, or sneezing while wearing the masks. But we're not really a society that does well in science, so these details aren't really welcomed. Masks are like a feel good placebo - you think you're adding to the general good even if what you're doing is pretty negligible. Positive thoughts.
I'm familiar with the N95 fit test, an agree they are the only one that provides real protection to the wearer, and that is only if properly worn.

But if surgical mask and other non N95 are worthless, then why cover your mouth in public (when close to others) when you cough? I would think that something that covers your mouth and nose would mitigate the spread of your germs if you were sick, and while your germs would still go outside the mask, not as many would spread, and not nearly as far..

It is more polite to spread your germs unobtrusively then letting the person you are talking to get hit with phlegm....... ;)

It helps on the distance factor but only if they are dry, when they get damp from the moisture in your breath, they stop being effective in that manner.

A sneeze travels at 100 mph.

I deployed in 1985 for my last major exercise as an enlisted guy...of course, it was oriented around a chemical attack on our base, so we all worked several days in MOPP with the final day entirely in MOPP 4. Our PA office wanted to do a newsletter for the families, so we contributed two picture.

We had one guy (6’6”) and one guy who was 5’2”. The first picture was the tall guy in his MOPP, the second was the short guy in the tall guy’s MOPP. We titled them “Before and After the exercise”.

Trump talks a lot and he's gonna be right once in a while. But actions speak louder than words and Trump's actions have been pathetic.

I saw this today: https://www.yahoo.com/news/kansas-farme ... 35437.html

That dude's singular action did more to help than Trump's admin has done in 3 months.

Questions regarding masks ...

How often should you change your mast/filter so you're not breathing in and spewing out too much of your own germs and waste?

What every day (i.e. not expensive) masks work for people who wear glasses (so their glasses don't fog up)?

If you could only wear one, which is better and why? A mask or a face shield?

I wear a washable cloth mask, usually no more that 5 minutes at a time for a Post Office visit. Groceries stores and restaurants have very limited human contact with curbside pickup. It's home made and the elastic is small, so there is no problem with glasses for short term use.

This the best thing I move seen yet on the topic, breaking down the number of virus cells needed for infection and how social interactions relate. Outside...good, short conversations at social distances...ok, not talking...better, sneezing and coughing...bad.

It’s a very informative and easy breakdown.

I just got back from the store. Probably 40% wore masks. Got mildly scolded by a lady pointing out that each aisle is now a one way street.

When you find the answer to this question let me know. I have been wearing glasses for over 25 years and haven't found a solution (outside of holding my breath) yet.
