GOP flips two CT State Legislature Seats - Blip or 2020 Preview

There were five special elections in Connecticut to replace Democratic lawmakers hired by the incoming Democratic governor...and the GOP flipped two of them in working class districts...

In the Uber-liberal Nutmeg State legislature remains in the hands of the Democrats, but the two upsets are interesting...
In the night’s biggest upset, Republican Gennaro Bizzaro of New Britain won the the 6th Senate District, defeating Rep. Rick Lopes, D-New Britain. The district includes the GOP-trending suburb of Berlin, where House Speaker Joseph Aresimowicz, a Democrat, barely won re-election last fall against a late entrant in the race.
Republican Joseph Zullo of East Haven won in the 99th House District, which was carried by Donald J.Trump in 2016, a harbinger of difficult times to come for the Democrats in a district they’ve owned for three decades. He defeated Democrat Josh Balter, who was cross-endorsed by the union-backedWorking Families Party.

Uh. Too small of a sample size to make much of, imo. :twocents:

Democrats gained 308 state legislature seats in 2018.

People read into stuff too much.

Right now (2019), Republicans stand for freedom and Democrats stand for free shit.

People love free shit until it starts impacting their freedom. Those two seats were probably somewhere that got taxed or regulated a bit too much.

Definitely not a good sign for Dems but never like to use special elections as a sign of things to come because a lot fewer of the electorate vote.

In the 2 elections, the difference was about 27K voters (in 2018 general) to about 7K voters (in 2019 special election) in 1 district and 8,400 (in 2018 general) to 3,066 (in 2019 special election). Most people don't care about special elections especially at a state legislature level though one of the reversals was by a stunning difference from the general.

Real small sample size. There will be a few more this year in all likelihood, let’s see how they go.

Democrats picked up 2 state Senate seats in red districts in Montana on the same day.

I don't think it's a big deal either. And, it's not all over MSM.... just sayin'...

We will see. I still think the overall body of information suggests that the trends are in favor of the Democrat Party.

I could have put this in the Democratic nomination process thread but I think it relates to this as well. Here is a report on a very recent poll that, once again, suggests that just about ANY Democrat will have a good shot at knocking Trump off next time unless public sentiment changes:

https://www.inquisitr.com/5323944/donal ... -wsj-poll/
Donald Trump has talked about easily winning a second term, but the reality does not quite seem so straightforward.

A new poll carried out by NBC/Wall Street Journal shows that Americans would choose any Democrat over Trump in the 2020 presidential race. When one considers the litany of prominent Democrats who have already joined the Democratic field — with Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Kamala Harris all running — the chances for Trump to repeat 2016 become slimmer.

According to the poll, 48 percent of Americans would vote for a generic Democrat over Trump. Forty-one percent of Americans would vote for the incumbent president.
